Developmental Intern - Construction Engineering

Location: Massena, NY, US

This select 12-week paid internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.


The intern will assist various Construction Engineers in the department with their day-to-day management of Construction Contractor Personnel to ensure the assigned scope of work is satisfied in accordance with the contractual agreements. The intern will assist with projects encompassed under TLEM and Northern Zone RMPD portfolios. The intern will become familiar with NYPA, as well as learn industry construction practices, construction management practices, contract delivery performance, scheduling, effective meeting etiquette and practices, technical document handling practices, OSHA industrial safety practices, and how to appropriately/effectively assist visiting A/E’s with design development. The intern will comprehensively learn aspects associated with performing civil, mechanical, electrical, security and IT/OT construction work necessary to support the operation of equipment critical to the Bulk Electrical System (BES).

  • Understanding of Typical Industry Construction Practices
  • Understanding of Tools used in Construction Management (Sharepoint, Excel, etc)
  • Understanding of importance of Configuration Management Practices
  • Understanding of Asset Management (Turn Over, As-Builting, Standards, Work Order [PM's], Warehousing)


  • Effective Team Communication - Verbal and Written
  • Effective Time Management & Reading, Understanding Construction Schedules
  • Effective Meeting management skills, 
  • Conflict Resolution & Construction Change Order Processes


  • Ability to run an effective construction meeting, and read and interpret construction schedules
  • Ability to communicate with construction professional with improved understanding of industry lingo
  • Ability to review and read construction contract documents effectively, specifications and drawings

Education, Experience and Certifications

Technical Competencies:

  • General Understanding of Construction Management, paired with general principles of one of the following engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil).
  • Microsoft Office Applications & Internet Cloud based application usage

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Good Oral and Written communication skills, Detail Oriented
  • Trust worthy, Willingness to be directed, Team Player

  • Self-Starter & Motivated to Learn

Education Background:

  • Working toward a 4 year degree in one of following areas:
  • Project Management, Engineering - Civil, Mechanical, Electrical
