Developmental Intern - Human Resources

Location: Massena, NY, US

This select 12-week paid internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.

Summary

The intern will help NYPA on Human Resources and Labor Relations at three sites, St. Lawerence FDR Power Project (STL), Clark Energy Center (CEC), and Blenheim-Gilboa Power Project (BG).

The Human Resources intern assist the day to day tasks of Human Resources and Labor Relations and provide critical support by:

  • Reviewing compliance of applicant records to comply with record keeping requirements
  • Employee file review and maintenance of records to ensure documents are properly filed and maintained in accordance with company policy
  • Continuing the process of electronic scanning of personnel files to comply with directives for the use of Sharepoint
  • Auditing (annual self-audit) of all I-9's to comply with Immigration and Naturalization Services for employment eligibility verification records and update files to ensure STL is in full compliance with Federal Regulations

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities the intern will walk away with after this internship

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the grievance process
  • Exposure to the Federal and State guidelines governing employment matters
  • Benefit guidelines related to specific groups of employees at the site (Management vs. IBEW)

Skills:

  • Use of technology in the job for record keeping and retention of documents, hiring, recruitment, etc.
  • Learn how to deal with a diverse set of individuals in conflict and emotional settings.

Abilities:

  •  Organizational skills and working with other professionals in a confidential setting

Education, Experience and Certifications

Technical Competencies:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel and ability to learn other software programs (SAP, Hiring tools, etc.)

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Ability to follow a specific set of instructions and willingness to learn
  • Approachable attitude and able to work with a diverse group of individuals in a professional manner
  • Organized and able to work with little direction

Education Background:

  • Pursuing an undergradute or graduate degree with a focus in Human Resources/Labor Relations
