Associate Energy Trading Analyst

Location: White Plains, NY, US

Summary

The Energy Trading Analyst function as the liaison between Generation Resource Management and all NYPA Generators, Power system Operations, Commercial Transactions, Market Issues, and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) regarding generator bidding and resource availability. The position supports the GRM Senior Staff in reporting and aligning resources among plant personnel, dispatchers / outage coordinator, and the NYISO by coordinating and discussing market and plant conditions with the Power Portfolio Manager and Shift Supervisor to optimize plant performance and revenues. The position is also the liaison between the hedging (financial) plan and the physical trading of commodities related to plant operations. In addition, the position is responsible for the compiling and analyzing of market data to create reports, responses, presentations, etc. to assist the day-to-day functions of the GRM staff in managing and optimizing the NYPA generator portfolio.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor potential changes to NYISO Procedures, Manuals and Technical Bulletins and discuss with Market Policy Group if actions are warranted from GRM.
  • File and maintain updated versions of documents in the Trading Room.
  • File bid curves and correspondences between ECC and GRM such as the  Long Range Summary of NYPA Unit Outages.
  • Maintain documentation of DMNC, VAR test submittals.
  • Review Technical Bulletins, seek guidance on impact on GRM operations and ensure correspondence is well communicated to all members of team.
  • Provide support to the GRM management staff in coordinating and disseminating any approved NYISO rule changes to Plant personnel and System Operations.  Incorporate changes to GRM procedures or operating protocols.
  • Assist in supporting the ERM Dashoard maintained in Tableau platform.
  • Assist in compiling data and formatting for presentation by CCO Report for scheduled Trustee Meetings.
     
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Familiar with NYISO Market and basic understanding of NYPA generating plant characteristics and capabilities.
  • Preferred understanding of bulk power system security needs, dispatch processes, bidding processes via NYISO MIS, NYPA policy and procedures for marketing.
  • Good oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Good analytical ability & numbers comprehension.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • General understanding of the economic impact of decisions within the position’s scope of authority.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders both inside and outside the organization.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or business or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years applicable work experience in the electric industry.
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State to attend meetings and review submission data.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and use a computer and telephone.
