Developmental Intern - Electrical Controls

This select 12-week paid Internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.

Summary

The Intern in Test Engineering Group will perform hands on testing of protection relays, substation control equipment in the Engineering Lab environment. The intern will provide assistance to the Manager of Testing group in developing relay test plans and build automation capabilities for testing digital substation relay and control equipment. Intern will be involved in performing relay tests in lab and reviewing the results. Necessary skills and knowledge on testing the relays, software, and operating the equipment will be imparted.  Intern will work withing the Central Engineering department exposed to Relay Protection, Metering, SCADA and control projects and associated test engineering activities.  Intern will be exposed to engineering work in the field and office environments.

Knowledge:

  • Intern will get an opportunity to learn and work on latest developments in Protection Relays and Relay Testing activities including IEC 61850 technology, digital substation design and testing. 

 

Skills:

  • Intern will learn the relay protection theory and gain hands-on experience on protection relay operation, configuration and testing activities.

 

Abilities:

  • Intern will gain understanding of system protection and relay test practices followed in utility industry. Further, intern will prepare presentations, flowcharts and working with other staff thereby develop professional skills.

Education, Experience and Certifications

 

Technical Competencies:

  • Demonstrate understanding of Electric Power System fundamentals. Exposure to relay protection is a plus. 
  • Has experience in programming (Visual Basic or Javascript preferred).
  • Familiarity with relay software a plus.
      

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Strong Analytical abilities
  • Self-motivated, Eager to learn, Organized
  • Strong communication skills (oral & written)

 

Education Background:

  • Pursuing BS Electrical Engineering from an accredited University, minimum of 3 years completed or pursuing Master's in Electrical Engineering degree.
