Developmental Intern - Renewable & Distributed Energy

Location: White Plains, NY, US

This select 12-week paid internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.

Summary

This intern will be responsible for assisting NYPA’s Clean Energy management team with the implementation of numerous solar PV and other renewable energy projects in various stages of development. They will support the team Manager, Lead Analyst and Engineer in developing project Scopes of Work through a variety of tasks including project research, preliminary project analysis, document preparation and review, and data entry and recording associated with ongoing implementation management of the projects. NYPA’s Clean Energy team is tasks with leading State and Local governments with the implementation of renewable energy resources, the intern will support all areas of this objective. 

In addition to assisting the clean energy team members and their tasks, the intern will also receive independent tasks in which he/she will complete with limited oversight.  

In order to efficiently and effectively deploy renewable energy projects across NYPA's customer base, significant efforts are made on behalf of our customers to ensure every aspect of their projects have been vetted and analyzed. This not only includes pro-actively examining all technical, financial, and regulatory implications the project may have on the customer but also working with the vendors and contractors through the construction and commissioning process. Achieving success on behalf of our customers helps advance New York State's clean energy and greenhouse gas emissions goals.

Knowledge:

  • The intern will leave his/her internship with a better understanding of how to successfully implement a distributed energy project from project identification to project completion as well as gain a comprehensive understanding of NYS policies regarding renewable energy.  

 

Skills:

  • Upon completing the summer internship the intern will enhance his/her project management skills and project development
  • how to effectively scope and time-manage project objectives

 

Abilities:

  • This intern will be able to better assess problems and find analytical solutions through critical thinking approaches.  
  • The intern will also learn how to use utility hosting capacity maps and create preliminary solar array designs.
  • The intern will be able to better communicate with project stakeholders both internal and external.

Education, Experience and Certifications

 

Technical Competencies:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office product suite, specifically Excel, Office, and PowerPoint, is required. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use industry-specific software such as Helioscope, System Advisory Model, MS Project etc., is preferred.

 

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Ability to speak professionally with fellow NYPA employees, customers, consultants, and vendors.
  • The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills; good written and verbal communication skills; possess the ability to organize information and effectively present ideas to the intended audience.
  • Must be able to receive verbal direction and follow up with the supervisor.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making and organizational skills.

 

Education Background:

  • Junior/Senior-level College or Graduate student, degree tracks in Finance/Economics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental Policy/Studies preferred.
