Lead Investment Analyst

The Lead Investment Analyst is responsible for conducting (or supporting the development of) holistic assessments and gaining organizational support for major investments in NYPA’s Generation, Transmission, Infrastructure and Energy Solution assets.  Further, the role supports the establishment and maintenance of broader financial plans that align with and support the organizations’ strategic objectives.  The Lead works as part of a centralized project office and supports both daily operational and financial needs of the organization, works collaboratively with the enterprise-level portfolio management group, and is involved the longer term strategic decision making on assets.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead the development and implementation of new processes that methodically evaluate and communicate the impact of investments made by the company. 
  • Develop and continuously improve models to conduct analyses that consider financial (ROI, NPV, Quality Indices, etc.) and non-financial (Strategic Value, Risk, Mission Alignment) aspects of a specific or wide range of investment(s) and clearly interpret and communicate outcomes for decision-making purposes.
  • Lead collaborative teams in conducting detailed analyses for Infrastructure, Transmission, Generation (both traditional and renewable), and Energy Solution investments, gain organizational support in results and effectively communicate recommendations upward through executive management. 
  • Support and/or contribute to analyses conducted outside EPMO as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and consider potential impacts of that investment on the business.
  • Ensure the application and assumptions related to Capex, Opex and salvage values, various owner configurations, pricing indices, market conditions, (i.e. regulation updates, power market shifts, policy impacts), scenario analysis, financial execution requirements, cost of service impacts, etc. are accepted throughout the organization and standardized where applicable.
  • Drive PMO groups, strategic entities, etc. in developing work mix that is appropriate for the operating environment, aligned with corporate drivers and fits within NYPA’s financial and risk tolerance.
  • Implement and maintain an investment benefits tracking tool to ensure projects are realizing overall objectives. 
  • As required, lead teams that conduct financial valuation or economic viability assessments on existing assets or potential acquisition targets, substantiate strategic opportunities for the business, establish appropriate financial operating targets, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient in electrical power systems, typical utility practices, regulations and external industry forces as well as how utilities conduct capital and maintenance investments and their impact to financial performance.  
  • Financial utility/energy industry experience with exposure to energy markets, various types of power agreements, bond/treasury requirements, accounting practices, long range planning, etc.
  • Experience with the development and utilization of financial models/tools to convey business impacts. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and persuasion skills – the ability to proactively and comfortably engage with anyone from immediate colleagues to remote working groups, entry-level colleagues to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated success within a continuously evolving operating environment and have (1) the willingness to be an idea/thought contributor in this atmosphere and (2) the ability to successfully implement those thoughts.    
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work accordingly to deliver results in a timely manner.  
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical skills with an ability to gather (via an ERP system or other private/public databases) and evaluate large volumes of data, interpret trends and offer solutions or recommendations for corrective action. 
  • Ability to think big and small – can think strategically from a corporate perspective with the ability to drive into the details when necessary.  

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Management, Finance, Engineering or related field preferred. 
  • Advanced specialty degree or Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is preferred. 
  • Minimum 7 years of work experience in a related field.  
  • Minimum 3 years experience working within a Utility Finance, Asset or Portfolio Management environment required. 
  • Advanced certifications (CPA, CFA, CAIA, etc.) preferred. 
  • Experience with writing and interpreting VBA or other coding experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
