Mechanical Engineer II

Location: White Plains, NY, US


Provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of the various power generation and transmission facilities owned and operated by NYPA. Engineering responsibilities include inspections, condition assessments, startup and testing, troubleshooting, calculations, design, preparation of detailed fabrication/construction drawings and specifications, inter-discipline and inter-department coordination, engineering support during construction and outage, and equipment/system evaluations for mechanical systems and equipment.


  • Develop designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various the mechanical equipment and systems’ problems or improvements.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various mechanical equipment and systems for proper installation and operation; problem identification and troubleshooting; or improvements.
  • Provide direction and review for the mechanical design and drafting personnel in the development of the project drawings.
  • Review work, including the designs and specifications, produced by other engineers.
  • Provide office and field engineering support and oversight during construction or outage activities.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for junior engineers.
  • Independently schedule and prioritize requests to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution of the project.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations on vendor products to ensure engineering requirements and Authority needs are satisfied.
  • Gather information (site, vendors and other engineers) for engineering tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive experience and knowledge of utility, commercial and industrial facilities and the analysis, design and integration of their various mechanical systems and components.
  • Ability to apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices, coupled with the understanding of the NYPA’s policies, operations, and objectives, to solve all but the most complex engineering problems, and make technical recommendations on design methods and obstacles on a project as well as programmatic level.
  • Extensive understanding of all the various types and disciplines’ drawings required for transmission and generation facilities.
  • Strong understanding of the fundamental drawing and specification system.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of and a working familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.
  • High computer literacy.
  • Developing performance as a leader on multi-discipline team projects.
  • Developing coaching skills for junior engineers.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise, complete and articulate reports which explain recommendations.
  • Ability to develop complete, accurate and detailed modification packages, specifications, drawings and other engineered construction documents.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong Understanding of Configuration Management.
  • Advanced knowledge of the various Authority power generation facilities and transmission facilities.
  • Knowledge of NYPA’s policies and procedures.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
  • A Professional Engineer’s license, registered in New York State or active pursuit of licensure and New York State registration.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamic and various mechanical systems and theory and there function in the electrical utility industry.
  • A minimum of 8 years of related work experience.
  • Experience with NYPA policies and business practices preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Ability to access all areas of the plant and conduct physical evaluations of grounds and equipment including ability to work at high elevations.
