Senior Enterprise Risk Specialist

Summary

The Enterprise Risk Specialist is responsible for assisting in the management of NYPA’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program on a day-to-day basis. This individual is expected to identify inherent risks and opportunities, document risk tolerance levels, and report on the status of ongoing monitoring of key controls in support of NYPA’s achieving its strategic goals and objectives. Through a common risk identification, analysis and management discipline, the Senior Specialist provides consolidated reporting of disparate risks, improves understanding of key risk drivers and performance indicators to drive subsequent decision-making, strengthens organizational governance, and supports a risk intelligent culture throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Perform highly complex statistical, quantitative and qualitative analysis on individual risks and the risk inventory to identify underlying relationships and assist in the risk roll-up/alignment process.
  • Perform regular monitoring of emerging risks, analyze risk trends, and work with risk owners to analyze complex risks and make potential risk mitigation recommendations.
  • Lead the Enterprise Risk team (ERT), in working with   management, and staff to facilitate the Enterprise Risk (ER) process for risk identification, definition, assessment, analysis, mitigation, and monitoring throughout  .
  • Assess the need for and create/develop custom risk reports for various levels of the organization including the Executive Risk Management Committee (ERMC), Executive Management Committee (EMC), and the Board of Trustees.
  • Work with Enterprise Risk director and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to ensure effective alignment of the ER process with Internal Audit, Compliance, and the Office of Strategy Management.
  • Lead the ERT in the development of training materials and assist in conducting ER education/training to various levels of   Business Units management and staff.
  • Assist the Director-Enterprise Risk Management and the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) in the preparation of executive level presentations.
  • Update and maintain  ’s ER framework, policies, procedures, and other associated ER documentation.
  • Provide support on the implementation and on-going operation of the Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) software module specific to the ER program. 
  • Coordinate the resolution of risk software problems with the vendor or the   IT department as needed.
  • Lead the performance of regular updates to the risk repository, assessment, and reporting tool and ensure integrity of the repository database.
  • Work with director and the Chief Risk Officer to establish and implement the Enterprise Risk task level schedule to ensure timely delivery of assigned work products.
  • Develop project and work schedules to ensure completion of deliverables to   Senior management, the Executive Risk Management Committee (ERMC), Executive Management Committee (EMC) and the Board of Trustees.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of up-to-date meeting minutes, reports and related materials for the Enterprise Risk website.

  • Proficient analytical skills, attention to detail and accuracy, able to identify key issues, interpret information and present recommendations and conclusions in a self-confident, clear and concise manner. Self-motivated with the ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines consistently.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves a fair amount of personal contact with others, especially business unit leaders. Must be comfortable interacting with senior level management, reflecting a high-level of professionalism and experience.
  • Must have excellent communication, organizational and problem solving skills. Individual should be highly motivated and energetic. Experience managing and successfully executing projects involving cross-functional teams
  • Familiarity with established ERM frameworks (e.g., COSO, ISO31000, etc.) and their practical applications
  • Knowledge of financial instruments and analysis techniques (value at risk, Working knowledge of various types of risk including, Market Risk, Operational Risk, Credit Risk, Liquidity Risk, Financial Instrument Risk, desired but not required
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise risk management best practices as they apply to the energy/utility industry, desired but not required
  • Strong understanding of the deregulated NYISO energy marketplace, desired but not required.
  • Strong understanding of NYPA’s generating and transmission facilities, desired but not required.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or Economics.
  • A minimum of 9 years directly relevant experience with risk analysis, integration of business processes and development/implementation of enterprise risk programs is required
