Developmental Intern - Historical Records Management

Location: Albany, NY, US

This select 12-week paid Internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.


The New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation seeks interns who can add value to the preservation of historical records. The output of this work will not only improve the operations and reduce risk, but will also potentially provide previously unavailable access of historical material to the public.  Potential projects include:

Governance Document System Assistance 

  • Aid in the evaluation of existing governance documentation for relevancy, authorship, ownership, consistency, and review dates.
  • Assist in creating procedures, guidelines, and resources for the Canals governance document system. 
  • Assist in creating digital and physical educational materials for governance documents.


Historical artifact inventory 

  • Review the Thruway asset list and identify items of historical interest for potential display.
  • Research historical assets and write brief descriptions of what they are, their purpose, and value for preservation (keeping) by the Canal Corporation.


Indexing and developing finding aids for historic engineering and design records. 

  • Group listings on the Inactive Records Center Inventory by canal structure and geography.
  • Identify physical records in the NYPA/Canals Albany office and a group by structure and geography
  • Perform reference requests for NYPA/Canal staff

  • Microsoft Office

  • Basic keyboarding and data entry
  • Microsoft Excel and Word



  • Working in office, warehouse, and in the field.  
  • May need to do some lifting.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Technical Competencies:

Education Requirements:


  • Information Science students specializing in archives and/or records management
  • Historic Preservation students specializing in government, engineering or industrial history
  • Industrial Archaeology students
  • Civil/Structural Engineering students with an interest in history
