Summary
Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and to ensure a safe and sustainable workplace.
Manages or has responsibilities across multiple disciplines within the Environmental, Health and Safety job family.
Responsibilities
- Commit to action through the acquisition of permits and authorizations. Certify to government agencies and the public that applicable regulations are met.
- Ensure that staff and management remain aware of changing regulatory issues and that programs, policies and procedures are current.
- Remain cognizant of statutory and regulatory developments on the State and Federal level and their potential consequences for business strategies.
- Directly and indirectly supervise employees, including temporary employees assigned to specific short-term (1-3 years) projects, including contractors working on specific tasks.
- Participate and fully comprehend O&M budget responsibility, capital expenditures and long term planning.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong project management/planning skills are vital. Ability to coordinate the EHS activities of all persons involved in projects to ensure on-time products that meet goals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to adapt style to the demands of the audience.
- Substantial knowledge of data management and analysis. Ability to understand and access multiple database applications and project schedules.
- Ability to manage contractual matters and consultant work efforts.
- Ability to write concise analyses of alternatives, present the results of deliberation in a concise fashion, and develop consensus within a group of varying disciplines.
- Ability to collaborate with others on initiative efforts. Demonstrated ability to lead process improvements in a team environment
- Understands labor contracts and/or employee relations and is able to drive resolution of complex issues.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree, in environmental science/engineering, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene or a related technical degree.
- Previous experience leading safety, compliance, and environmental programs
- Minimum 5 years of directly related experience within an industrial/utility environment
- Minimum 3 or more years of experience managing employees / leading a team
- Master’s Degree in related field, Professional Engineer, Safety Professional (CSP), Industrial Hygienist (CIH), a plus
Physical Requirements
- Up to 20% travel primarily within NY State.
- Physical ability to access Authority facilities is necessary on a routine basis.
- Valid Driver’s License

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
