Summary
The duties and responsibilities of this position are to both operate and maintain the Astoria 500 MW Combined Cycle Plant to meet availability, generation and plant heat rate requirements following all local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
Responsibilities
Operating the power plant includes operating a combined cycle power generation plant as Operating Technician in field operations, unit shutdowns and startups and getting qualified operating the plant from the Control Room. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining all plant components including gas and steam turbine, heat recovery steam generators, environmental control, steam & water quality, cooling tower, boiler feed, condensate, circulating water and fuel systems. Additional responsibilities include troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance on instrumentation equipment and mechanical/electrical systems. Responsibilities also include operating and maintaining the plant in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including but not limited to Title V Air permit, SPDES and other environmental permits. This position requires working a rotating 12-hour shift. The responsibilities of this position include being able to operate the control board.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experienced in troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of plant systems and equipment.
- Independent judgment and decision-making skills while performing self-directed work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to climb ladders and work on heights.
- Must be able to able to lift minimum of 50 pounds.
- Must qualify to wear a full-face respirator and maintain the qualifications.
- Must have a valid Drivers’ License
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Science, Engineering or Technology or related.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in power generation plant or electrical substation or military/marine power plant applications in operation and maintenance of these systems.

Hourly rates for union-represented employees are collectively bargained by the New York Power Authority and UWUA. The negotiated pay rate for this position is $50.60 per hour.
