Technical Training Instructor I

Summary

The Technical Training Instructor I works with operations, maintenance and support personnel to design, develop and deliver training at the appropriate level for maintenance and operations trainees completing their initial qualifications at the NYPA generation and transmission facilities. The position also works with each site to provide ongoing advanced level training for journeyperson and senior level operations and maintenance staff; and provides support for cross training other crafts and departments (i.e. engineering, safety, and  project management), based on need and availability. This position provides the Authority with a well-trained staff that consistently implements and follows NYPA processes, procedures and protocols during normal and casualty operations..

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver classroom, hands-on and OJT  training for operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Document the sequence of operations of key plant systems and equipment in various modes of operation.
  • Provide technical support for new or updated plant systems and equipment.
  • Support additional site training needs as requested, including opportunities for online programs.
  • Increase professional technical and training competencies and stay abreast of changing standards and codes.
  • Evaluate and track trainee progress through all phases of the program.
  • Coordinate with 3rd party vendors to evaluate and implement external programs.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed training records for program participants.
  • Identify future training needs in conjuction with supervisors, other training department personnel, and various NYPA business units.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Senior craft level understanding of generation and transmission plant components and operating principles to include all plant specific equipment for the applicable craft.
  • Thorough knowledge of utility industry best practices and protocols as it relates to the specific craft.
  • Ability to effectively implement ADDIE or SAT models to learners at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to understand and discuss operation of plant equipment using prints or other available tools in all modes of operation.
  • Thorough understanding of safe work practices
  • Ability to plan and deliver programs on daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis with limited supervision required.
  • Ability to perform all training functions involved with development and delivery of courseware.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills; ability to convey complex tasks to learners at various levels effectively.
  • Motivated self-starter with a desire to provide outstanding customer service to all levels of the organization.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Two (2) year technical degree; 4 year degree preferred.
  • In lieu of a degree, technical course credits equivalent to degree or certification requirements, from an accredited college or training program, along with additional documented operational/training experience.
  • Minimum 6 years operations experience.
  • Minimum 5 years formal training experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work at heights, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)  including full face breathing protection.
  • Lift, move and assemble items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Able and willing to travel up to 25% of the time.

New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $99,000 - $121,000. Salary offered will be determined based the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
