Intern - Construction Engineering

Location: Lewiston, NY, US

This select 12-week paid Internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.

Summary

The intern will work under the guidance of a Niagara Project Management (PM) Staff Mentor(s) (Construction Engineer and/or Project Engineer) assisting in the day-to-day management of Contractor personnel to ensure that their assigned scope of work is satisfied in accordance to the contractual agreements.

 

The successful candidate will assist with various Civil, Mechanical and Electrical projects managed by PM Staff, depending on discipline/ field of study and nature of projects being undertaken by the department. 

 

Ideally, the chosen candidate would assist with the development of 1 - 2 projects from inception to field installation. 

 

These projects include:
LPGP LEM, RM LEM, Niagara Switchyard Transmission LEM, Development of LPGP Hoist Gallery Roof, The Rehabilitation of the Failed RM-2 Stator, Deployment of the RM Coffer Dam; as well as other projects. River Intake Power Distribution System and Controls and Underground Conduit Inspection, Potable Water Line Replacement, Niagara Gorge Parkway Replacement, Niagara Parapet Fence Installation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities the intern will walk away with after this internship

Skills: Good communication skills (both written and verbal) to be used with with Engineers, Contractors, Supervisors, Plant Personnel, etc.  The ability to complete simple design tasks depending on discipline.  Develop good computer skills and working knowledge of construction methods.

 

Knowledge:

Learn construction installation techniques, coordination requirements, sequencing, etc.
Possess an understanding of engineering drawings, design criteria, construction deliverables, etc.
Develop an understanding of schedule and budget requirements for construction projects.

 

Abilities: Understand the design and theory of the installation they are overseeing.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Technical:

General principles of Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
Microsoft Office Applications.
Ability to Pick-Up Site Specific Software Applications (i.e. Microsoft Outlook, PowerNet, SharePoint, Database Development, etc.).
General knowledge of construction methods and ability to read technical drawings.

 

Behavioral:

Good written and oral communication skills. 
Detail oriented.
Willingness to take direction.  Ability to communicate well with others. 
Punctual. 
Self-starting and motivated.

 

Education:

Ability to assess Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Constructibility .
Communications – Contractor management.
Detail oriented. Accurately record daily activities.
