Summary

Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and to ensure a safe and sustainable workplace.

Develops and implements health and safety policies and procedures. Conducts risk assessments and coordinates with state agency & insurer inspections. Manages the Occupational Health and Safety Program. Investigates accidents and incidents. Provides training and guidance on health and safety issues. Monitors compliance with health and safety legislation. Promotes health and safety in the workplace, which is about preventing injury from all incidental dangers that may arise within the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise NYPA and/or contingent staff . 
  • Perform assessment of Region’s EHS performance and identify practices for continual improvement.
  • Manage the H&S component of the site(s) Emergency Management Plans.
  • Actively promote, support and participate in all NYPA safety programs.  Provide safety leadership and act as a safety resource on all shifts.
  • Identify and develop future skill requirements through training and job rotation for EHS department employees.
  • Work with Project Management to ensure NYPA site EHS personnel have reviewed design and construction methods for projects.
  • Provide routine EHS auditing of on-site contractors work activities to ensure compliance with NYPA’s EHS policies and procedures.
  • Interface with NYPA Corporate EHS staff to ensure timely updates of policies and procedures due to changes in regulations.
  • Represent sites(s) or send a designee to all required Committees and meetings. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Highly effective skills as a leader on multi-discipline team projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Ability to organize and present budgetary requirements.
  • Computer skills and applications understanding of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Maximo and/or SAP 
  • Working knowledge of facility operating procedures and regulatory policies.
  • Self-motivated and proactive to remain informed of changes in equipment, policies and personnel.
  • Cooperative leadership style and negotiating skills are essential.
  • Demonstrate advanced ability to plan and execute assignments.
  • Ability to solve labor, technical, operational, and financial issues.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or Safety discipline preferred. 
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or Safety discipline, preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in EHS management.
  • Minimum 3 yrs experience supervising a workforce in the related field.
  • Utility experience, preferred.
  • Applicable Certifications, PE, CIH, CSP, CHMM, CUSP, etc. are preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to tour Authority power plants
  • Must possess a driver’s license and be able to travel throughout New York State on an occasional basis. 

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: Please review below suggested good faith salary estimate (GFE). 
GFE: $120,000 - $165,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
