Summary
Accountable for overseeing the conduct of the System Operator Training program to support NYPA’s overall operations, including developing and maintaining course lesson plans, providing effective classroom instruction with support exercises or simulation, facilitating on-the-job training to real-time system operators, updating the Energy Control Center training records to meet NERC requirements, and ensuring operators maintain task qualifications according to NYPA’s training program manual requirements.
As NYPA is a NERC Generation Operator (GOP), Transmission Owner (TO), and Transmission Operator (TOP) registered entity, the Senior Systems Operations Trainer will be responsible to ensure that the systematic approach to training process is followed to provide reliability-related and general task training for real-time system operators, support staff, or other positions as they are identified. The training material includes, but is not limited to, coordinating and directing switching schedules using 3-part communication protocols, directing generation and voltage schedules, and how to reliably operate NYPA assets in the Bulk Electric System with the NYISO and local TO/TOPs during normal or emergency operations.
Responsibilities
Senior System Operations Trainer:
- Performs all responsibilities associated with ECC System Operator Trainer.
- With a NERC TO Certification and advanced Operator training experience, additional responsibilities include:
- Provide classroom (NERC Independent Learning Activity, ILA, and / or on the job training, OJT, for identified task.
- Advance technical knowledge to assist the System Operations Director with developing and delivering complex training topics.
- Deliver all Real Time Reliability Training to the ECC Senior System Operators in addition to the ECC System Operators.
- Assist the System Operations Director with developing a lesson plan for the next year.
- Directly communicates with NPCC and NERC staff during a Training (PER) audit or NYPA’s training program.
- Manage and ensure compliance with ILA training that is subject to regular NERC Audits.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Senior System Operations Trainer:
- Technical writing/ instructional design experience
- EMS Situational Tool Awareness / Operations Training Simulator experience desired
- Excellent organizational, time management, verbal, and written skills
- Ability to learn Systematic approach to training (ADDIE) process development.
- Strong presentation/ training skills to deliver NERC approved (ILA) training to System Operators
- Strong Mentoring skills
- Ability to understand all Control Center Tasks and how they relate to NERC compliance requirements.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s (BAS) degree in Electrical Engineering, other Engineering disciplines, or related technical fields
Required:
- Associate (AAS) degree: Electrical Technology or equivalent Science/Technology field desired
- NERC Transmission Operator Certification
Lead System Operator:
- Completed all internal training, and maintain Senior System Operator task verification through ECC System Operator cycle training which is typically completed within 5 years
- Min 4 years NYPA System Operator experience.
Senior System Operations Trainer:
- Minimum 5-years’ experience in : System Operations experience (BES), Power System, Operations (Generation, or transmission), Nuclear Navy or specialized miliary technical training and or Instructor experience
Physical Requirements
Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State. Ability to sit for long periods of time (up to 12 hours) in front of computer monitors while maintaining situational awareness; communicating effectively while speaking English (per NERC requirement); see, hear, and react to alarms.
