System Operations Trainer

Summary

Accountable for the daily management and coordination of NYPA’s overall operations, including Overseeing, monitoring, and evaluating the operational performance; directing the preparation of operating budgets and proposals for capital expenditure and investments in infrastructure, technology, equipment, systems, or other assets and resources; analyzing and approving operational investments that best meet the organization's business needs.

System Operations Training (SOT) is responsible for providing initial and continual training to system operations staff to ensure safe and reliable operation of NYPA’s BES assets in accordance with strict industry guidelines and approved procedures.  SOT maintains and implements a robust training curriculum for NYPA’s generation and transmission assets to effectively prepare identified personnel to achieve qualification prior to operating NYPA’s equipment during normal and emergency operations with interconnected utilities.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate classroom training for all ECC operator levels including identified operating support staff.
• Review and approve On-the-Job training guide changes for generator dispatch and transmission operations. 
• Periodically review and update NYPA online training modules to support NERC generator and transmission training requirements. 
• Monitor, track, and evaluate changes in regulatory requirements to determine impacts to system operator task training and course materials.  
• Evaluate and track system operator progress according to NYPA ECC’s initial and continuing training programs. 
• Consult with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to modify or develop program content to follow NYPA training manuals and NERC Credential Maintenance program manual requirements. 
• Remain current on NYPA task support documents and procedures to provide accurate training to operations.
• Maintain instructor qualifications to provide training and increase technical expertise to meet NYPA organizational goals.  
• Maintain, secure, and validate individual training logs, sign-in sheets, and learning management system (LMS) entries to construct robust, auditable evidence for NERC compliance audits.
• Collaborate with EMS engineering personnel to test, refresh, and maintain base-case scenarios with the training simulator environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to analyze information effectively and identify practical solutions.
• Growing knowledge of power generation, transmission, or water management concepts to support defined tasks, such as basic analysis, data review, or assisting with system checks.
• Ability to recognize routine operational issues within assigned systems and escalate or suggest initial, straightforward actions with moderate guidance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.  
• Proven ability to coach others and tailor training approaches to meet diverse learning needs.
• Experience conducting assessments, evaluations, or providing structured performance feedback preferred.
• Exposure to generation, transmission, or real time system operations environments and experience with control centers or NERC regulated work, preferred.
• Experience using or supporting training within an EMS training simulator environment preferred.
• Experience maintaining training records, audit evidence, or compliance documentation preferred.
• Ability to follow a systematic approach to training model (ADDIE) and experience collaborating with SMEs to develop or refine technical training content.
• Ability to serve on evaluation panels, uphold professionalism during operator performance assessments, apply criteria objectively, and deliver constructive feedback when needed.
• Ability to manage and prioritize multiple work assignments, adjust schedules as required, and review audit evidence effectively.

Education, Experience and Certifications

• Associate’s degree required, Science/Technology field preferred 
• Minimum 4 years’ experience in training, instructional design, technical writing concepts, or related fields, OR
• Minimum of 18 months experience in Power systems, systems operations, or a control center environment. 
• All candidates are required to possess or obtain a NERC Transmission Operator Certification within one year of hire.

Preferred 

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, other Engineering disciplines, or related technical fields
• Train the Trainer certification preferred

Physical Requirements

Approximately 5% travel primarily within NY State.  
Ability to sit for long periods of time (up to 8 hours) in front of computer monitors while maintaining situational awareness; communicating effectively while speaking English (per NERC requirement); 
Ability to see, hear, and react to alarms.
Ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 4 hours) while delivering interactive training to participants
