Developmental Intern - Environmental Safety

Location: Massena, NY, US

This select 12-week paid Internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.

Summary

1) Assist in the preparation of the monthly potable water report in order to maintain compliance with NYSDOH Part 5 of the Sanitary Code. This would involve collecting flow data, examination of monitoring analysis to assure compliance, maintaining records and data input.
2) Once trained in Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) this individual may perform weekly inspections of the hazardous waste area and maintain drum inventory.
3) Support compliance with Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) Part 750 in the monthly preparation of the SPDES Discharge Monitoring Reports which is submitted to the NYSDEC-Collect data such as calculating flow readings, review analysis reports from all outfalls, data input and record retention.  
4) Aid in the review  and inspection process of site Fire Safety Program.
5) Assist in the Revision of the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC) to maintain compliance with 40 CFR 112.  Overall, this is a review of the facilities spill potential, contingency plans, site plans, oil bulk storage, notification requirements, lab data and response protocols 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities the intern will walk away with after this internship

Knoweldge:

  • A better understanding of Industrial Safety/Environmental programs including inspections, written programs, data input and training. 

Skills:

  • Experience the interaction between regulatory authorities, employees  and NYPA EH&S administrators.

Abilities:

  • Achieve EH and S management experience (hands on).  Specifically, directly involved with our SPDES program, waste management, recycling, spill response and water treatment. 
  • Obtain hands on experience with various environmental and safety related regulations.
  • Hands on experience with sample collection and analysis and regulatory reporting.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Technical Competencies:

  • Must have some experience using Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook and Access

Behavioral Competencies

  • Must have good communication skills
  • Essential to be organized
  • Important to be detail oriented 

Education Background:

  • Pursuing an education and/or interest related to Environmental or Safety field is preferred
