Electrical Supervisor

Summary

The objective of the Electrical Supervisor is to manage, review, and administer electrical personnel to insure proper maintenance of the generating units and auxiliary equipment to achieve maximum generation and to implement and take responsibility for all electrical work either construction, preventive/ corrective maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise union employees on daily basis. This includes labor relations, time management, and monitoring direct activity.
  • Work with Maintenance Resource Management to develop short term and long term resource loaded schedules.
  • Work with other management staff for schedule compliance and work allocation.
  • Must work closely with MRM and department heads to assure all scheduled work is planned and completed within the constraints of the budget.
  • Understand and administer the goals of NYPA while creating a good working environment and a smooth-running department
  • Analyze and recommend solutions for maintenance and construction problems to the engineering staff for implementation.
  • Write up and receive Guarantees and Clearances on equipment to be removed from service, making a final check to see that all sources of energy are properly removed to insure safe working conditions
  • Coordinate manpower with other departments to best utilize available manpower and shorten scheduled outages.
  • Develop subordinates to provide a capable and reliable work force.
  • Ensure work crews perform quality work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with approved job plans, procedures, and practices.
  • Review job packages to ensure they are complete and current prior to performance of the work.
  • Review completed work job packages and maintenance work orders to verify all steps are complete, and to ensure that all data/information is recorded.
  • Provide feedback to the Maintenance Superintendent, Maintenance Planners, and to the Maintenance Resource Superintendent regarding the effectiveness of MRM procedures and policies.
  • Provide technical input to the development of maintenance procedures and job plans.
  • Ensure that the work crews and craft personnel meet the facility planning and scheduling requirements.
  • Provide technical input into the adequacy of maintenance procedures, work methods, and equipment performance.
  • Ensure that time reporting for maintenance tasks are accurate and reported in a timely manner.
  • Utilize work schedules submitted by maintenance planners to generate personnel assignments considering qualifications, availability, and overtime issues.
  • Administer Power Authority policies including safety and labor relations at the first-line level to insure a safe and harmonious work force.
  • Enforce the Bargaining Unit Agreement, administer discipline, and handle Step A grievance meetings.
  • Manage employees including performance management, salary administration, succession planning and workload balancing.  Identify and recommend solutions to modify staff to meet NYPA needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiar with NYPA's policies and practices as well as industry-wide policies and practices.
  • Understand various laws and regulations and how they affect or can be applied by NYPA.
  • Understand related disciplines, divisions, and/or departments and their interaction with the incumbent's assignments.
  • Understand different operating systems and equipment at RMNPP, Switchyard, LPGP, and other outlying substations and structures, such as the Intakes and boat slips.
  • Working understanding of present and future technologies to aid in routine maintenance activities.
  • Familiar with Arc Flash and related electrical safety standards.
  • Good oral and written skills.
  • Ability to facilitate and address group meetings and also coordinate large scale outages involving many departments.
  • Skilled in problem-solving as they arise.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the contract and policies of NYPA and ability to address non-performance when it occurs and to acknowledge personnel on outstanding performance are needed
  • Competent in the use of personal computers and software packages typical in an office environment, including, but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Associate’s degree from an Accredited College or Electrical Maintenance background (apprenticeship or other documented training) in a related industry
  • 10 years of electrical maintenance experience
  • Completed a four-year apprentice program in electrical maintenance or have equivalent experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of managerial experience in a supervisory capacity with excellent organization skills.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motor vehicles

Physical Requirements

  • The Electrical Supervisor is routinely required to climb ladders, etc., and wear a respirator.
  • 24-hour, 7-days per week availability is required for this position.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
