Early‑career and mid‑level Project Engineers support engineering and construction projects across NYPA’s diverse portfolio – from planning and design through construction, commissioning, and closeout. These engineers coordinate resources, maintain project documentation, support contractor and vendor collaboration, and help ensure work meets all safety, schedule, cost, and regulatory requirements. Opportunities span both utility‑focused and customer‑focused projects across New York State.'
Project Engineering at NYPA encompasses several types of work, offering exposure to construction engineering, transmission and substation projects, clean‑energy and renewable integration initiatives, customer‑focused energy programs, facility modernization, and large capital/Propel projects. Project Engineers in this pool may contribute to major statewide initiatives – such as transmission line expansions, renewable energy connection projects, energy storage deployments, facility upgrades, and electrification efforts – offering significant opportunities for growth while supporting NYPA’s clean‑energy mission.
This posting allows NYPA to accept applications year‑round and match candidates to opportunities as they become available. Candidates are placed based on technical competencies, experience level, and interest areas. Roles at this level do not require a New York State PE license.

Responsibilities
- Support project lifecycle activities including scoping, planning, scheduling, cost tracking, and risk assessment.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external contractors across all project phases.
- Prepare and review design documents, budgets, forecasts, bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
- Conduct field inspections, equipment reviews, and construction oversight support.
- Support emergency response and after‑hours project needs as required.
- Assist in developing change orders, monitoring contractor work, and ensuring compliance with project requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Foundational understanding of engineering project management principles, project controls, and construction practices.
- Ability to interpret codes, standards, project budgets, schedules, and technical reports.
- Strong documentation, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and adapt standard specifications.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Engineering or related field required
- 0–8 years of engineering project or construction management experience depending on level.
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State
- Willingness to enter confined spaces and climb/scale power system apparatuses.
- Ability to travel to vendor facilities (worldwide) to support construction activities and to inspect equipment fabrication and commissioning for length of time needed.
- Availability to work outside of normal business hours (including weekends) when project demands.
The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: P2: $96,000 - $120,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
