Assistant Real Time Systems Engineer I

Summary

Assists in research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA’s energy services. Helps in the configuration, programming, implementation, construction, and testing of equipment. Ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.

Contributes to the engineering, design, implementation, and day-to-day operations of supervisory control systems (SCADA/EMS), networks, communications, and machine control systems (PLC/DCS/HMI/RTU) in support of NYPA G&T assets.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior staff and supervisor on a full range of control system design implementation and modification projects,  and operations and maintenance activities/practices.  
  • Assist with implementation and execution of NERC CIP and cyber security policies, procedures, and associated technical solutions.
  • Perform field visits to observe implementations and assist in the administration of on-site technical support.
  • Assist in the coordination of work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and implementation of control systems projects and/or associated O&M activities.
  • Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours

Site OT

  • Perform emergency response on a 24x7 on-call basis for facility real-time
  • Assist with daily support of end-users of plant-wide business and local area network (LAN) systems. 
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the design, operation and maintenance of Operations Technology control systems specific to the electric utility along with their various systems and components. 
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects with guidance.
  • Awareness of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Ability to perform basic engineering calculations, and contribute to the development of specifications, scopes of work, reports, and design packages.
  • Physical ability to navigate industrial sites, which may include climbing, bending, or working in confined spaces.
     

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited college or university
  • Exposure to electric utility industry preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 20% travel primarily within NY State
  • Must be able to provide 24/7 on-call support to operating facilities.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
