Associate Monitoring & Diagnostic Engineer

White Plains, NY, US

The New York Power Authority is making investments in industry-leading Asset Performance Management (APM) technology and is utilizing advanced analytics across its generation and transmission infrastructure. The Integrated Smart Operations Center (iSOC) is instrumental in delivering improved asset performance by coordinating the efficient deployment and operation of powerful predictive analytic software, coupled with intelligent devices, to drive our asset life-cycle decision-making processes, standardize APM procedures, and enable an enhanced asset ‘condition assessment’ communications protocol in a consistent, structured, and safe way.

The iSOC monitors multiple enterprise-wide technology systems to provide asset management capabilities for each of NYPA’s operational groups by playing a critical role in identifying, managing, coordinating, and escalating generation, transmission, and security incidents and events on common devices, infrastructure, networks, and applications where one or more operational groups have a vested interest.

The iSOC Associate Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineer works in an intellectually challenging and rewarding environment, as part of our central and regional asset management team comprised of hydro generation, fossil generation, and transmission data management experts, to ensure that the iSOC supports both daily operational analysis needs and long-term asset management strategic decisions.

  • Direct responsibility for the daily use, modification, and improvement of advanced analytics and thermal performance models to identify and communicate data analyses of critical systems, components, and processes, to the assets owners.
  • Support team to discern information from a myriad of data sources including industry standards, work history, equipment manuals, and operational/historical trending.
  • Design, build and modify a variety of analytic models capable of capturing incipient operational anomalies of power generation and transmission systems.
  • Using a variety of analytic tools, analyze with the purpose of aggregating, consolidating, and evaluating operational data into documented asset health and thermal performance reports in support of NYPA’s Asset Health Monitoring and Diagnostic Center.
  • Investigate, prioritize, and document advisories, convert them into documented ‘cases’, then clearly communicate to site Operations Managers on a weekly basis.
  • Evaluate historical data and trend equipment performance in order to predict component health, promptly alerting asset owners of anomalies within those trends which could adversely affect the reliability, availability, maintainability, and performance of NYPA’s hydro and thermal fleet with the goal of continuously improving NYPA’s Generation and Transmission performance.
  • As new equipment / sensors are installed, work with site engineers and the OEM to determine operating constraints and develop an asset monitoring model.
  • Interact with hydro and thermal plant Operations management personnel, WPO engineering personnel, as well as equipment manufacturers.
  • Assess anomalies, identifying and quantifying the associated risks to the plant, and follow up to ensure resolutions are tracked to completion.

  • A clear understanding of data management and asset management best practices and processes.
  • Knowledge and experience using data historians (OSI-soft PI, for example) and other software tools (Tableau, Python, Power BI, etc.) to analyze and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work with respect to project schedules, and emerging conditions and to deliver results in a timely manner.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to compile clear and concise reports.
