Benefits Specialist II

The Benefits Specialist II is part of an innovative team that manages and communicates our competitive total rewards package. This Specialist II will collaborate with the team to strategize on benefit offerings and process improvement as well as work closely with our employees and retirees assisting them with understanding, enrolling, and utilizing the variety of benefit plans offered. #LI-CJ1


  • Function as plan administrator for assigned benefits programs; ensure benefits vendor relationships and programs are managed and third-party administrators (TPAs) are administering programs properly; take action to resolve routine claims issues. Develop strong working relationships with key vendors and consultants.
  • Apply a continuous improvement philosophy to processes to enhance administration, reduce costs, and increase efficiencies of benefit programs.
  • Process monthly invoices and conduct monthly billing audit.
  • Participate in the planning and development of the overall benefits programs for salaried and union employees.
  • Act as subject matter expert for leave programs and benefits. 
  • Serve as primary point of contact for managers, employees, and Payroll throughout the leave management process.
  • Assist with creation and delivery of benefit communications including: oversing New Hire Benefits Orientation and supporting new employees in enrolling in benefit plans; conducting employee education meetings as needed. updating benefit guidebook and policies; and engaging in one-on-one employee inquires.
  • Participate in the preparation and evaluation of bids for benefits plan providers.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget; track assigned benefits program spending.
  • Work with internal resources in the Human Resources, Procurement, Law, Accounting, Payroll and IT departments to ensure delivery of quality services to employees and plan compliance.
  • Continue education and training to keep abreast of applicable legal requirements and related tax regulations to ensure benefits program compliance.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience administering and designing benefits programs and processing claims.
  • Technical knowledge of applicable federal and state laws pertaining to benefits, including HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, PFL, ADA, ERISA, ACA, etc.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Good research skills in a variety of mediums to remain up to date on benefits trends and laws.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills, demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, and Power Point.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of SAP Personnel Module preferred.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to observe confidentiality, communicate with people in potentially stressful situations and work well under pressure
  • Ability to work within a team environment.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field and four (4) years of directly applicable benefits experience, including administration, claims resolution, vendor management and design


  • Associate degree in related field and seven (7) years of directly applicable benefits experience including administration, claims resolution, vendor management and design.

Physical Requirements

  • Some travel required primarily within NY State, less than 5%.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and use a computer and telephone.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs and assist in setting up for events/programs.
  • Occasional ability to attend meetings/events outside of normal business hours.
