Developmental Intern - Construction Project Management

Location: White Plains, NY, US

This select 12-week paid Internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.



The intern would work under the guidance of a Niagara Project Management (PM) Staff Mentor(s) assisting in the day-to-day management of NYPA Projects.

The successful candidate would assist with various Civil, Mechanical and Electrical projects managed by PM Staff, depending on discipline/ field of study and nature of projects being undertaken by the department.  

Ideally, the chosen candidate would assist with the development of 1 - 2 projects from inception to field installation.  

These projects include: 
LPGP LEM, RM LEM, River Intake Power Distribution System and Controls and Underground Conduit Inspection, Vessel Replacement, Niagara Fire Alarm and Safety Systems, Niagara Gorge Parkway Replacement, Niagara Parapet Fence Installation, among other projects. All of the projects the intern will assist on will benefit the life extension and modernization of NYPA's assets.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities the intern will walk away with after this internship



  • Exposure to professional and ethical responsibility.  
  • Knowledge of hydro-power plant operation.  
  • Exposure to projects multidisciplinary projects that work to optimizing the operation of NYPA's hydro-power assets.  
  • Budget, Cost Control, and Scheduling requirements for projects.



  • Familiarity with activities in Project Management.
  • Experience in reviewing design drawings and specifications.
  • The ability to complete simple design tasks depending on discipline.  Develop good computer skills and working knowledge of project management methods. 
  • Good communication skills.



  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.  
  • Use of acquired techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering and project management practices.

Education, Experience and Certifications


Technical Competencies:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principals.
  • Ability to learn engineering applications including civil, mechanical and electrical systems, renewable energy technologies and construction practices.


Behavioral Competencies:

  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage a variety of projects and to set priorities.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work independently
  • Willingness to travel via plane. Internship will require travel via plane and vehicle to Niagara/Buffalo, NY.  
  • Willingness to commute to White Plains, NY.


Education Background:

  • Completed three years towards a Bachelor of Science in a Engineering Field.  
  • 3.0 GPA preferred.  Candidates pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Energy, Power, or Civil Engineering Preferred.
