Summer Intern - NY Energy Manager Data Analytics

Location: White Plains, NY, US

This select 12-week paid internship program begins June 2019 and ends August 2019.

Summary

The New York Energy Manager (NYEM) is a virtual energy management service of NYPA providing commercial customers with expert advisory services and a platform with powerful analytics to manage energy use.  NYEM seeks a summer intern who is excited about data analytics and interested in helping customers reduce their energy use as well as their carbon impact. 

The summer intern will assist in the delivery and expansion of NYEM advisory services: 

• Assist in the development and testing of advanced analytics for a various types of building data.
• Analyze customers' data to identify energy trends & asset/equipment efficiency
• Prove & enhance forecast models and predictive analytics.
• Assist in the design and automation of advanced analytics pipelines to be applied to NYEM customers' data.
• Develop sample reports for Building Management System (BMS) services and added analytics.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities the intern will walk away with after this internship

 

Knowledge:

The intern shall gain a basic knowledge of building science and energy efficiency concepts:

  • building energy research topics
  • basic data science
  • data visualization tools.

Skills:

At the conclusion of the internship, the participant will be equipped with skills including, but not limited to, the following:

  • review and interpret building energy data
  • use analytic skills to identify base and peak load and identify opportunities for efficiencies 
  • communicate opportunities for efficiencies to a variety of audiences
  • present basic building data and energy concepts to a variety of audiences

 

Abilities:

The intern will hone a variety of abilities, tailored based on his or her career and academic goals, including:

  • manage multiple activities
  • deliver on commitments
  • operate independently or as part of a team
  • communicate to a range of audiences and in a variety of formats
  • utilize a variety of data analytics tools 
  • draw insights from building energy data

Education, Experience and Certifications

 

Technical Competencies:

  • Intern must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of programs and willing and able to learn other types of software.
  • Experience with research and analysis is required.
  • Basic knowledge of energy efficiency, building energy research, and/or building science is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL, Python, R and/or Tableau also a plus.

Education Background:

  • Undergraduate or graduate students studying engineering, architecture, facilities management, mathematics, information technology, data science, business, environmental sciences, and other technical disciplines.
