Responsibilities

The mechanical intern will primarily work on three co-funded R&D projects during the summer 2020 - a thermal energy storage based CHP demonstration project, a Li-ion battery storage demonstration project and a new zinc based regenerative fuel cell project.  The first two projects are currently underway with equipment being installed summer 2020 with the third project being kicked-off early 2020.  The Li-ion battery storage project will be installed at the WPO and the thermal energy storage project will be installed at SUNY Purchase, located about 15 minutes from the WPO.  In addition, the intern will support on-going EPRI projects and emergent investigations.  This support is important and will allow R&D engineers to focus on the broader view, while at the same time, investigate additional new and innovative technologies for future R&D projects.  Additionally, it is expected that the intern would provide a fresh outlook and diverse perspective on the various R&D projects within the department as well as day-to-day challenges.  Regarding the primary focus, energy storage plays a critical role in transforming the future of the electric power grid as society moves toward increased electrification coupled with reduced fossil fuel generation and increased integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar.  R&D's focus on energy storage will become more and more important to bridge this gap of intermittency.  In recognition of the importance of energy storage, New York State set a target of 3GW of energy storage by the year 2030 with an interim goal of 1.5GW by the year 2025.
