The research & technology development department is responsible for research and development at NYPA.
The research & technology development intern will primarily work on the development of analytics for monitoring and diagnostics of NYPA’s system including using data from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and also developing analytics for equipment performance monitoring and asset health monitoring.

Research & technology development department has been already working in a couple of projects related to wide area monitoring and generation equipment performance monitoring aligned with NYPA strategic initiatives. The research & technology development intern will work on one or two of these projects. These projects will help NYPA to develop necessary models to be used in real time and post contingency analysis and also to verify the performance of our hydro units and Statcom and would greatly impact NYPA research & technology department as well as NYPA operation and planning departments.

Below is the list of few projects the intern would primarily focus on:
1. Real time applications and real time contingency analysis
2. Equipment performance monitoring and asset health monitoring

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with competing priorities
  • Collaborative and team orientated
  • Customer-focused especially when dealing with vendors and internal clients
  • Understand mathematics and statistics, power system, power flow studies, stability and reliability, Dynamic      simulations.
  • Proficient experience with MatLab, PSS/E and similar power system softwares
  • Proficient experience working with Data analytics and Python
  • Proficient experience working with PMU data and models
  • PhD student in Power System


Education, Experience and Certifications

Must be enrolled in an graduate program, PhD student in Power Systems, 3rd year and more
