Director, Integrated Media & Marketing - Community Development

Summary

The Director of Integrated Media & Marketing, Communities will lead a team responsible for developing and executing media and marketing campaigns that support the Power Authority and Canal Corporation's work across New York State—from Buffalo to Long Island and up to Massena. This leader will drive engagement with the organization's traditional community stakeholders, including elected officials, industry partners and employees, while advancing opportunities to reach new audiences. The Director will be responsible for messaging, including social media messaging, talking points, fact sheets and briefing documents for internal and external use, and for responding to media and stakeholder inquiries. This individual will work closely with departments like Community Affairs, Workforce Development, Environmental Justice and others to ensure communications reflect the Power Authority’s Vision 2030 priorities and pillars. The Director also monitors public sentiment and the Power Authority's reputation in the communities we serve, using insights to guide outreach and engagement efforts that deliver results in line with the Power Authority's goals. #LI-CJ1

Responsibilities

  • Create and amend, as necessary, the Integrated Marketing & Media relations strategy for NYPA ensuring mission, vision, values and alignment to business objectives and state priorities are clearly articulated
  • Liaison to external partners, media and stakeholders ensuring positive promotion of NYPA’s position in a project or activity to the press and public
  • Lead a team of Integrated Marketing & Media relations professionals, focusing on accuracy, clarity of thought, collaboration and integration across NYPA
  • Working with leadership, communicate consistent positive messaging on the Power Authority’s contributions to New York State
  • Oversee all media relations in crisis communications and issues management planning
  • Manage the collection and distribution of research material, press clips, follow-up reports and other reporting activities
  • Serve as spokesperson for media inquiries as needed
  • Ensure accuracy and updates to all media lists and create new/better relationships with media professionals

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and passion for the Power Authority’s mission, vision, values and extensive operations
  • Experience and understanding of electric utility and/or energy-related issues relevant to the Authority and New York State, and solid general understanding of and ability to communicate on these matters as well as on related economic and environmental issues
  • Proven strong skill in writing, editing, strategic planning, persuasion and collaboration
  • A passionate leader focused on team development, employee growth, morale and transparency
  • Ability to respond well to changing priorities and work well under frequent deadline pressure
  • Proficient in negotiating communications approaches and solutions and capable of adapting style to fit the occasion/spokesperson
  • Demonstrated experience is running an integrated marketing & media relations team as part of a larger communications business unit
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with members of the news media, and executives, within the Governor’s Press Office or other state agencies and utility industry organizations preferred
  • Extremely focused, flexible and providing best outcomes based on client needs and communications best practices
  • Team player who puts a high premium on collaboration, creating a positive environment and forging strong relationships
  • Strong skills in media monitoring platforms such as Meltwater, strong Microsoft office programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience working in related field preferred
  • Experience leading a team of professionals
  • Proven media contacts and placements
  • Proven experience in a crisis communications role within a “crisis management team” within an organization
  • Experience as a communicator in the electric utility industry is a plus

Approximately 10% travel

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $154,000-211,200. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
