Summary

The New York Power Authority’s (“NYPA”) Strategic Vision aims to transform New York State’s energy grid into one of the most advanced in the industry.  The plan invests in Generation, Transmission, Infrastructure, Technology and Customer assets to ultimately provide a more flexible, reliable grid that meets consumer expectations and New York State’s energy goals.  In support of those objectives, NYPA has established an investment planning processes throughout the organization, including a robust Asset Management system, that support the efficient onboarding, performance and maintenance cycles over the life of each asset installed.  The ultimate goal is a focused organization and intelligent investment plan that optimizes NYPA’s resources, ensuring value is created at each step along the way.  The role of the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO) in this transformation is to drive consistency, transparency, organizational alignment and reliable value-adding decision frameworks throughout the business.

 

The Director of Asset Investments is responsible for a team overseeing the development, implementation and governance around a process to assess and gain organizational support for major investments for our Generation, Transmission, Technology, and Headquarters assets.  The director leads collaborative teams that conduct systematic analyses to understand the impact of major investments to the organization, company and customer base across the state and ensure decisions are in alignment with broader organizational strategies.  Further, the role is also responsible for the development of financial asset strategies that provide direction and define overall investment schemes for both existing and newly acquired assets. #LI-JP1

Responsibilities

The initial responsibility of the Director will be to establish the value-adding functionalities of the core group, to embed financial asset strategies and to implement a framework that right-sizes investments for the continued economic viability of our assets and consistently drives positive decision-making throughout the business.  Success in this role would create the following:

 

Transparent Investment Decisions

  • Develop and implement a system that identifies potential Strategic, Value-Driven or major Capex/Opex investments, coordinates with representatives across appropriate business units, ensures necessary analyses are conducted and effectively communicates recommendations to major stakeholder units and executive leadership, ultimately driving decisions beneficial to the company.  
  • Lead dynamic teams in conducting robust analyses for major Transmission, Generation, Customer or Infrastructure investments potentially including economic viability assessments, substantiating acquisitions or strategic opportunities for the business, and establishing appropriate financial operating targets. 
  • Facilitate communications across and upward throughout the business unit(s), investment committees and executive leadership to ensure organizational support is gained for any recommendations provided.  

 

Scalable Asset/Investment Models

  • Develop models and/or tools necessary to conduct analyses that consider financial (ROI, IRR, NPV, Economic Value Added, Quality Indices, etc.) and non-financial (Strategic Value, Risk, Mission Alignment) aspects of a specific or wide range of investment(s) and clearly interpret outcomes useful for decision-making. 
  • Develop detailed financial models for Infrastructure, Transmission and Generation (both traditional and renewable) investments/assets that consider Capex, Opex and salvage values, various owner configurations (i.e. Power Purchase Agreements), pricing indices, market conditions (i.e. regulation updates, power market shifts, policy impacts), scenario analysis, financial execution requirements, cost of service impacts, etc. 
  • Support the business from financial and strategic perspectives, ensuring that the organization maintains a lean operating model, mitigates financial risk and projects positive returns.

 

Strategic Portfolio Alignment

  • Collaborate with local and site leadership, strategic entities, etc. to ensure work mix is appropriate for the operating environment, core versus strategic, and that the levels of overall investment and financial risk associated with the planned work are in alignment with corporate drivers. 
  • Maintain relationships with all strategic and/or conceptual aspects of the organization and ensure a singular plan forward is in place that supports organizational objectives.

  • This role leads a high-performing group in the organization. Utilizing adept leadership, mentoring and influencing skills, team members shall be continuously developed, challenged accordingly and driven to perform their best while they collaborate across the organization and promote change. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven managerial, communication and interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to work with various functional groups of all skill levels.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems, energy markets, typical utility practices, regulations and external industry forces as well as how utilities conduct capital and maintenance investments and their impact to financial performance.  
  • Financial utility/energy industry experience with exposure to energy markets, various types of power agreements, bond/treasury requirements, accounting practices, long range planning, etc. 
  • Expert knowledge or financial and/or data aggregator systems including ERP platforms, work management software, database structures and reporting solutions.  
  • Strong leadership and influencing capabilities necessary to align processes across entire business and align emerging strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain trusted partnerships throughout organizations.
  • An enthusiastic change champion and independent thinker; self-motivated to implement process and procedural innovation and improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the utility industry, current trends, strategies, challenges, etc. and operating practices. 
  • Ability to advise and influence various groups within the organization of established policies, procedures and business processes to ensure adherence and conformity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to think “big picture” and search for insightful, creative solutions.
  • Enterprising, resourceful and results-oriented.
  • Proactive, collaborative and strategic.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A./B.S.) in Management, Finance, Engineering or related field required. 
  • Advanced specialty degree or Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from a school accredited by the ABET, is preferred. 
  • Minimum ten (10) years of utility or energy industry experience in Utility Finance, Asset or Portfolio Management environment. 
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in financial investment modeling.  
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • Advanced certifications (CPA, CFA, CAIA, etc.) preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Travel to Regions 25%.
