Director DER Advisory

NYPA’s Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Advisory team is one of the fastest growing business units at NYPA. With advanced solar and storage expertise, a deep working knowledge of the NYS renewable energy market and policies, and over 300 MWs of solar and 40 MWs of energy storage projects in the pipeline, the DER Advisory team is looking for a strong leader to manage and grow this business to ensure our customers and NYPA meet its commitments towards New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) goals. 
We are looking for an experienced Director who is hard working, collaborative, and measures a team’s success by the success of its customers. The DER Advisory team is knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about helping our customers integrate renewables and distributed energy resources to decarbonize their buildings. We share a value system that emphasizes team dynamics and shared goals for expansion and opportunity.   
As the Director of the DER Advisory team, you will be responsible for realizing the vision, fostering the growth of DER Advisory Project Engineers and Project Managers, developing strategic relationships with customers, developers, industry organizations, and key policy stakeholders, and ensuring the quality and execution of our DER Advisory services.  
The DER Advisory Project Engineers and Managers work directly with NYPA’s customers to originate and facilitate the development of customer-sited solar and storage projects.

  • Manage project and grow pipeline year over year in clean energy (solar PV, battery storage and additional renewables) to meet annual implementation goals.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with key New York state stakeholders. Build trust and establish relationships with customers.
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership for development of new products and programs related to distributed energy resources. 
  • Be a thought leader in renewable energy offerings and represent NYPA in outreach efforts, conferences, and webinars.
  • Lead budgeting process, manage P&L and costs, and provide forecasts based on the market aligning with organizational strategies.
  • Develop engineering and project management professionals through coaching, feedback, and customized support for each individual.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of renewable energy market and emerging business delivery models including renewables, distributed energy resources, electrification, and smart grid deployment.
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills. Must possess the ability to organize information and customize presentations for audience. 
  • Highly interpersonal, team-oriented, and a supportive management style.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Ability to think creatively and critically when solving problems.
  • Strong project management skills to develop project plans, timelines, work schedules, and coordinate with customers, contractors, permitting agencies, utilities, and other third parties.
  • Excellent ability to lead negotiations with developers, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with budgeting and financial management principles  

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience developing and managing projects and/or programs required 
  • Experience in energy, renewables, or utilities required
  • Experience in new business development from lead qualification through contract execution, preferred
  • Experience leading, developing and mentoring a team.
