Director Demand Flexibility

Demand Flexibility is one of the most critical needs in the energy transition. NYPA has advanced energy management and renewable energy expertise and a deep working knowledge of the NYS energy market and policies. With over 250 MWs of solar and 35 MWs of energy storage projects in the pipeline, NYPA is looking for a strong leader to develop, implement, and grow our Demand Flexibility services to ensure the commitments towards New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) goals are met by us and our customers.

The Director, Demand Flexibility, you will be responsible for developing the product to make demand flexibility a valuable resource for our customers and grid operators in New York State. You will grow the business by forging strategic relationships with customers, vendors, developers, industry organizations, and key policy stakeholders 

The Director will lead a team of Project Engineers and Managers to work directly with NYPA’s customers to facilitate the development of demand flexibility solutions. #LI-CJ1


  • Lead strategic planning and product development for Demand Flexibility solutions to realize the vision, which will include refining the business case, structuring customer project deals, following and incorporating energy market issues and regulatory affairs, and developing implementation processes 
  • Responsible for the ongoing product management of Demand Flexibility solutions to ensure it is meeting customer needs in a dynamic and competitive market.
  • Lead business development strategy with NYPA key stakeholders (e.g., Technical Sales, Key Account Managers, Product Development & Marketing) to sell Demand Flexibility solutions that help customers invest in DERs and leverage their existing loads to generate revenue and save money while decarbonizing. 
  • Manage the delivery and operations of Demand Flexibility solutions to meet customer expectations and support NYPA’s VISION2030 and CLCPA targets (including MWs in Demand Flexibility portfolio and CO2e reduction).
  • Track and forecast key results/metrics and provide operational reports, trends, and strategy adjustment recommendations to NYPA executives and Board of Trustees.
  • Identify, grow, develop, and manage a diverse team (e.g., energy advisors, technical engineers) needed to deliver Demand Flexibility solutions. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven success working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, such as shared services like Marketing, Corporate Communications, IT, Finance, Legal, Treasury, and Risk. 
  • Excellent product and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple, conflicting priorities, and communicate and interact with people at all levels of the organization.
  • In-depth knowledge of energy markets, electric grid innovation, distributed energy resources, and building energy management.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience in business development and managing client-facing solutions.
  • Experience developing and managing team members.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • 15 plus years of relevant experience with increasing responsibility
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in relevant industry experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Master’s Degree preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to travel required 15% of the time, primarily within NY state
