Director Risk Management

Summary

The purpose of this position is to help the Chief Risk Officer in implementing risk management strategies oversee an expansion of current efforts to embed a risk management culture within the NYPA business units.  While the selected individual will support the ultimate oversight role in Risk Management for both enterprise and operational risks, a significant responsibility for the selected individual will be to help bring a closer partnership between Risk Management and the NYPA business unit leaders, managers and staff as they assume their responsibilities for managing risks.  Therefore, this role serves as both a “risk management controller” for compliance with risk management guidelines and frameworks, but also as a service provider to the business units. 

Responsibilities
  • Identify and assesses operational risks of NYPA based on a risk framework aligned to industry standards such ISO 31000. Ensures appropriate mitigation of risks that exceed company’s tolerance limits.
  • Improving business performance, turning risk and compliance efforts into opportunities, and creating, enhancing and preserving value at the core of risk management efforts.
  • Interact with plant operations and commercial operations, teams enabling them to develop winning strategies by making risk-based decisions.
  • Accountable to the New York Power Authority (NYPA) for the successful execution of his/her responsibilities in furtherance of NYPA’s Asset Management Policy Company Policy CP 1 XX-X.
  • Reporting into the Chief Risk Officer, he/she is expected to advise the relevant NYPA teams on matters relating to the enablement of risk management capabilities across the spectrum of market, credit and operational risk
  • Define capabilities to address risk and performance management.
  • Manage risk exposure and performance measurement, aggregation and attribution, regulatory and economic capital allocation, limits and limit monitoring and management, reporting and ad hoc analysis, specifically an integrated risk and performance management framework, and workflow around consistent application of policy throughout the enterprise.
  • Responsible for working with subject matter professionals in key areas of risk management to define critical gaps in capability, design a recommended future state, and outline an implementation strategy including process, data, information management, analytics, reporting and technology.
  • Oversee various consultants when required including managing various facets of engagement including risk management, project acceptance, billing, delivery, and collections.
  • Continuous improvement with regard to development and implementation of an industry leading operational risk framework. 
  • Regularly communicate with relevant leadership, provides a dashboard view of risk for management review.
  • Support development and delivery of training business units in risk management concepts and capturing of risk related data in enterprise risk management system.
     
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and experience in building risk management process capabilities in the business.
  • Knowledge and understanding of risk management industry standards.
  • Demonstrated track record in leadership, project management, and business developmentExperience in facilitation of process change, training and education
  • Coaching and advisory skills.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Critical thinking – problem solving and solution building.
  • Engaged and engaging management style.
  • Ability to learn and understand the nuances of the business.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.  Master’s degree from an accredited university preferred. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in business environment either as a consultant or in a leadership position in business including roles for leading multiple teams and projects.
  • Preferred minimum 10 years of experience in risk management related functions.
Physical Requirements
  • Limited travel, primarily within New York State
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License
