Electrical Engineer I (Facility Ratings)

Summary

The Electrical Engineer is to support NYPA’s electrical facility ratings program for all NYPA existing and planned bulk electric transmission and generation facilities; uses their strong understanding of utility power system electrical design to extract facility ratings information from project and asset documentation; uses their project knowledge to perform schedule and project implementation tracking to allow for accurate and complete facility ratings; uses their understanding of electrical facility ratings and system configurations for two-way internal/external stakeholder communication; users strong organizational and analytical skills to accomplish these tasks for simultaneous planned and unplanned, inter-related and unrelated upgrades and projects that impact electrical facility ratings.

 

The Electrical engineer will be expected to perform electrical facility ratings calculations for all types of electrical equipment, and to present those results clearly to facility ratings end users; will have strong electrical system knowledge and can utilize a variety of electrical engineering software to perform short circuit calculations, electrical thermal ratings evaluations, harmonic and transient evaluations, etc. #LI-AE1

Responsibilities

  • Provide lead engineer function in support of a limited range of electrical equipment design modification projects, equipment applications and failure research, engineering studies, and operations and maintenance activities.  
  • Perform inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various electrical equipment and systems for proper installation, problem identification and trouble shooting, or improvements.
  • Provide direction and review for the electrical design and drafting personnel in the development of the project drawings.
  • Provide office and field engineering support and oversight during construction or outage activities.
  • Ensure deadlines are met as assigned by supervisors.
  • Independently coordinate the work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution projects.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations on vendor products to ensure engineering requirements and Authority needs are satisfied.
  • Gather information (site, vendors and other engineers) for engineering tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of commercial and industrial facilities and their various electrical systems and components are required.
  • Ability to apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices, coupled with the understanding of the NYPA’s policies, operations, and objectives, to solve all but the most complex engineering problems, and make technical recommendations on design methods and obstacles on a project as well as programmatic level. 
  • Knowledge of and a working familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • High computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated performance on multi-discipline team projects.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise, complete and articulate reports which explain recommendations.
  • Ability to develop complete, accurate and detailed modification packages, specifications, drawings and other engineered construction documents.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good presentation skills.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related work experience. 
  • New York State Engineer in Training certification or active pursuit of certification.
  • Experience with NYPA policies and business practices preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 25% travel, primarily within NY State.
  • Willingness to enter confined spaces and climb/scale power system apparatuses is required.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
