Electrical Engineers at the Assistant, Associate, and Engineer levels play a vital role in supporting NYPA’s mission to provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy to New Yorkers. These engineers help design, evaluate, and maintain electrical systems across generation facilities, transmission corridors, substations, metering systems, and customer side technologies. Work may include system studies, design updates, asset evaluations, field inspections, and reliability driven engineering tasks.
Early career engineering opportunities at NYPA span both utility focused and customer focused work, offering exposure to construction engineering, grid modernization, renewable energy integration, and facility upgrades. Engineers in this pool may contribute to major statewide initiatives – such as transmission line expansions, clean energy interconnection projects, energy storage deployments, and smart grid enhancements.
This posting allows NYPA to accept applications year round and match candidates to opportunities as they become available. Candidates are placed based on technical competencies, experience level, and interest areas. Roles at this level do not require a New York State PE license.

Responsibilities
- Assist or serve as responsible/lead engineer on design modification projects, failure research, and equipment application studies.
- Conduct field visits to observe construction, perform system inspections, and provide onsite engineering support.
- Perform operations and maintenance engineering support activities including troubleshooting, condition assessments, and equipment evaluations.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary work with other engineering disciplines and departments to ensure successful development and execution of projects and O&M initiatives.
- Apply codes, standards, and procedures to engineering tasks, performing research and ensuring compliance with Authority specifications.
- Review or prepare engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, and project documentation.
- Support and supervise maintenance personnel and contractors during assigned work, ensuring safety, completeness, and accuracy of all work packages.
- Participate in emergency response duties, including 24/7 on‑call ECC support for applicable roles
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Foundational to advanced knowledge of electrical engineering practices across major electrical systems and components.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and develop specifications, scopes of work, reports, and interdisciplinary design packages.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations (IEEE, NEC, NERC/NPCC where applicable).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with ability to collaborate across engineering groups, vendors, and field teams.
- Competency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with electrical design/analysis software such as SKM Power Tools preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with guidance at junior levels and independently at mid‑levels.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent required; Master’s preferred.
- 0–8+ years of increasingly responsible electrical engineering experience.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Approximately 25% travel, primarily within NY State
- Willingness to enter confined spaces and climb/scale power system apparatuses is required.
- Site ECC: Must be able to provide 24/7 on-call support to ECC.
The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $78,000- $161,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
