Energy Portfolio Analyst II

Summary

Market & Energy Portfolio Analysts provide analytical support to the Director, Market Analysis and Hedging (MA&H) and to the Generation Resource Management (GRM) marketers/traders including analysis of the energy, ancillaries and fuel markets to support ERM in optimizing NYPA’s generating assets.

 

  • Energy, Ancillary and Fuel Markets – Monitor and analyze the energy, ancillary and fuel markets by reviewing and monitoring performance and providing a weekly review of past bidding operations by the Traders in the GRM group.  Also responsible for the monthly development of profit and loss reports for key facilities.  MA&H’s forecasted generation combined with these reports will then form the basis for asset optimization and support the Resident Managers in the management of their fixed and variable operating budgets. 
  • Capacity Markets – Develop bid strategies for offering capacity sales to, and making capacity purchases from, the NYISO’s Installed Capacity Markets to ensure NYPA meets its capacity requirements.  Ensure NYPA offers all its available capacity resources into the market by entering bids into the strip/monthly or spot market auctions.
  • Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) – Provide analytical support to develop bid strategies prior to participating in RGGI auctions as required. Provide quarterly updates of the RGGI CO2 cost per MWh, including the new cost of inventory.  This is in addition to supporting NYPA’s strategy relating to CO2, Cost of Carbon and other emissions requirements.
  • Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Zero Emission Credits (ZECs) – Provide analytical support to senior staff responsible for maintaining RECs and ZECs obligations to meet policy requirements, such as the Clean Energy Standard.
Responsibilities
  • Develop NYPA bidding strategies for the capacity market. 
  • Manage the NYC Governmental customers capacity position by facilitating monthly strategy planning calls to their consultants and staff
  • Ensure full coordination with the Marketing and Energy Development department in relation to  NYPA’s load serving entity (LSE) requirements
  • Provide one month to six month projections determining the strip capacity rating for our generating units in conjunction with the Resident Managers.
  • Provide credit collateral reports referencing NYPA’s participation in the NYISO Capacity marketplace and coordinate with Treasury to ensure sufficient credit is available.
  • Secure sufficient carbon allowances through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) program, by working in conjunction with the Treasury dept. to establish and post sufficient credit collateral.
  •  Support the hedging program and coordinate all hedging activities with the MED department by developing portfolios and managing the risk book for the Recharge NY program.
  • Provide full-charge management of NYPA’s capacity portfolio for the NYC LTA customers as well as the NYS OGS contract.
  • Secure financial credits in compliance with the E.P.A.’s emission requirements by working in conjunction with NYPA’s Environmental department.
  • Develop bidding strategies, ascertain price quotes from the marketplace, and present bids to NYC Governmental customers for their approval. 
  • Submit bids into the RGGI auctions by performing margin posting, certifications and final balancing.
  • Monitor requirements of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative for carbon trading and is responsible for all activities to ensure participation.  Has full authority to enter into transactions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Established knowledge of energy markets and understanding of bid strategies and plant operating characteristics.
  • Strong knowledge capacity markets.
  • Knowledge of environmental programs and products.
  • Knowledge of the New York Independent System Operator settlement rules.
  • Ability to stay abreast of current and on-going federal mandates.
  • Ability to analyze & identify efficiency gains by introducing new tools/reports to better achieve performance gains.
  • Proficient in Excel. Knowledge of Tableau as well as database programming and querying using SQL, MS Access, VBA, SAS and Oracle, preferred.
  • Familiar with SAP preferred
  • Ability to formulate presentations and effectively communicate the information.
  • Established analytical skills
  • General knowledge of NYPA’s unique generating assets and of the NYISO.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science Business Administration, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 7 years of demonstrated experience, and strongly utilized analytical skills with an emphasis in the electric utility industry.
  • General knowledge of NYPA’s unique generating assets and of the NYISO.
  • Experience with Allegro preferred.
  • Experience with Ascend PowerSimm preferred.
