Summary
The New York Power Authority is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Hydrologic Engineer to join our team. This position is ideal for early career individuals with some professional experience in hydrology engineering or related field. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in and learn from various Hydraulics and Hydrology (H&H) related projects and assignments, including but not limited to reservoir inflow forecasting, hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, hydrologic time series analysis, and climate change studies. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the management and optimization of water resources within one of the leading power authorities in the nation while benefiting from ongoing learning and professional development.
Responsibilities
- Provide responsible engineer function in support of a limited range of H&H design modification projects, flood protection and mitigation, equipment applications and failure research, engineering studies, and operations and maintenance activities.
- Perform site visits to observe construction and administer basic on-site technical support.
- Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours.
- Coordinate work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution of projects.
- Perform research on applicable codes, standards and procedures and apply to work tasks appropriately.
- Perform inspections and evaluations to ensure engineering requirements and Authority specifications are satisfied.
- Assist senior staff in specifying, developing, and maintaining hydro flow forecast models.
- Assist senior staff in performing flood frequency analysis, and review site-specific PMP/PMF studies and climate change models.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic competency in the design, operation and maintenance of Water systems specific to the electric utility industry.
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
- Basic verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects with guidance.
- Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
- Ability to perform basic H&H engineering calculations, and adapt standard specifications, scopes of work, reports, and design packages to specific projects
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university. Specialization in Water Resources or Hydrology preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years related work experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
Limited travel (about 20%) required primarily to our Canal and NYPA facilities

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
