Lead Accountant

Summary

The primary responsibility of the Lead Accountant role is to provide assistance to the Manager of Accounting Operations. This role is also responsible for  preparing and generating financial management data and reports. Ensures the proper accounting of NYPA’s financial transactions and classification of costs and expenses. Maintains accounting records in accordance with GAAP, FERC and GASB. #LI-CJ1

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review various general ledger account reconciliations and maintain chart of accounts. 
  • Assist leadership in the preparation of the monthly financials and analysis.
  • Partner with leadership as needed in connection with the preparation of mid-year and annual audit financial statements and relative analysis, including financial statement notes.
  • Collaborate with leadership on annual PARIS and 2800 reporting.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports related to areas of responsibility.
  • Compile and prepare accounting analyses when required.
  • Apply best practices to the monthly financial close and recommend systems improvement.
  • Support ad hoc projects and prepare selected management reports as needed.
  • Participate with the month-end SAP financial close process and Identify areas to improve and streamline through automation and process improvement.
  • Independently or jointly conduct special reviews, prepare analysis, and provide recommendations to management in an effort to streamline practices and procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring all costs are classified in accordance with GAAP, GASB, and FERC.
  • Responsible for updating and maintaining deliverables to various departments/groups 
  • Provide direction and technical guidance to accounting operations team.
  • Support other members of the Sales Accounting team as needed to complete projects and keep others informed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness with ability to managing multiple deliverables.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and energetic and results oriented.
  • Knowledge of general ledger and financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate, analyze and develop solutions to problems.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate the assigned workload in order to meet monthly deadlines.
  • Strong ability to interpret financial results and present analysis to management
  • Process improvement skills with the ability to analyze and initiate change to establish more efficient processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required.
  • Minimum 7 years of accounting experience.
  • Understanding and knowledge of US GAAP, GASB, FASB.
  • Experience and knowledge of SAP ERP system preferred.

Physical Requirements

New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $115,000-$140,500. Salary offered will be determined based the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
