Lead Portfolio Analyst

Location: 

White Plains, NY, US

Summary

 

We will consider candidates who are able to work from one of these locations: White Plains office and Albany office. 

Within Operations, the Operations Portfolio Management group has developed a gated decision-making framework for all investment in NYPA’s existing infrastructure and growth or improvement opportunities.  This process provides the company prioritized workflow and an optimized portfolio of work, in addition to a governed progression of any given proposal across the lifecycle of the asset.  All components of a project lifecycle including development, planning, implementation, performance, and close-out are closely monitored and continued alignment with corporate strategies and financial, schedule, and risk targets are maintained.

 

The Portfolio Analyst is responsible for conducting holistic assessments of proposed investments, monitoring the health of the overall work portfolio and developing future work plans that support the safe, reliable and economical operation of NYPA’s generation and transmission assets.  The analyst works as part of a centralized project office and supports both daily operational and financial needs of the organization, ensures compliance with all project-related governance processes, and is involved in longer term strategic decision-making on assets.

 
 

Responsibilities

 
  • Assist in the oversight of the development and delivery of all Operations work portfolios in adherence with the established project governance process.
  • Maintain portfolio alignment with organizational asset management goals, financial targets, and strategic corporate metrics.
  • Conduct detailed qualitative and quantitative portfolio analyses to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Provide guidance for appropriate portfolio metrics and targets, striving for gradual delivery improvement.
  • Collaborate with enterprise portfolio management to ensure the Operations portfolio is comprised of a diverse portfolio of projects that support strategic initiatives, core business principles and asset management best practices.

  • Develop, design, and distribute portfolio-based reports for 1-, 5- and 10-year outlooks.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the portfolio database is kept operational, provides required services, and is adapted to meet the changing needs of the organization.
  • Develop, maintain, and deliver training and guidance materials and documentation related to the UOPP SharePoint platform.
  • Present portfolio analyses to stakeholders on both a regular and ad-hoc basis.
  • Present portfolio status updates to stakeholders’ teams at review meetings.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of project controls concepts and best practices.
  • Previous utility/energy industry experience preferred.
  • Experience with developing and/or managing project portfolios comprised of many different types of projects.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to proactively engage and collaborate with teammates across departments and levels.
  • Ability to make clear, concise recommendations and present proposals to all levels of personnel including executive management.
  • Ability to lead successful teams on efforts both large and small.
  • Time management skills, with the ability to work in a fast paced, continuous process improvement setting.
  • Expert knowledge of project management tools and analytical software such as SQL, SharePoint, PowerBI, Tableau, Primavera P6, amongst others.
  • Advanced analytical skills with an ability to evaluate large volumes of data and historical trends to enable more accurate forecasting and planning, offer solutions or recommendations for corrective action, and assist with implementing changes.
  • Thorough understanding of analytical software, KPI’s/metrics and portfolio or program management.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Minimum 4 year Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering (comparable equivalent).
  • Advanced specialty degree or Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from a school accredited by the ABET, is preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of work experience in related field. 
  • Experience working within a Project Management Office (PMO) or Program Management environment is preferred.
  • Experience in system management preferred.
  • Prior experience leading team efforts is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.

Ability to sit at a desk and use a computer and telephone
