Summary
SAP Developer works primarily in SAP client/server enterprise application. Responsible for software integration, external interface development and technical documentation. Assist in the design, specification, implementation and maintenance of systems applications. Code individual modules and less complex functions. Develops and builds application tables, panels, and reports for projects.
SAP Developer positions - within the Application Services Group administers the Authority’s Application Portfolio by conducting activities to support existing applications as well as implement new applications. To support existing applications the SAP Developer effectively manages the resolution of application production issues, adheres to all IT change management and incident reporting requirements, and verifies that applications are functioning properly after any change. Additional support activities that include installing upgrades and patches and, when required, analyze, design, code, and implement changes to enhance functionality or to accommodate business process changes. When an application has reached the end of its lifecycle the SAP Developer is tasked with identifying and implementing replacement solutions to meet business objectives. As technology and the utility business changes so must the solutions implemented to ensure NYPA business needs.
Responsibilities
General Characteristics
- Substantial technical expertise required. Must have both a diversified knowledge of Information Technology and a strong business orientation in order to provide technical leadership. Within NYPA, may be the highest technical expert in a certain discipline. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of information technology principles and practices, and an understanding of the NYPA’s policies, operations, and objectives, to solve complex business problems via IT enabled solutions, and makes technical decisions on methods and obstacles.
Direction Received
- Supervision and guidance related largely to overall objectives, critical issues, and policy matters. Consults with Manager/Director concerning unusual problems and developments.
- Work is checked by others at a Senior Managerial level.
Major Responsibilities
- Develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities. Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed proof of concept or solution. Usually performs as a staff advisor and consultant. Represents the Authority at technical conferences and Authority meetings.
Problem Solving
- Should be focusing on the results of the solutions rather than a specific area’s analysis procedures. In some cases, these “problems” may be associated with network, hardware, security, database, programming, or application functions. Should recommend the lowest cost solution for developing expanded capabilities and services for customers. Must have the ability to investigate what is not intuitive and to develop solutions to non-routine problems. Must be able to handle a project from start to finish, with major decisions being brought to the Manager/Director.
Communication
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Will be called upon to give both internal and external presentations that are logical, smooth, and influential. May be called upon to give expert testimony on behalf of the Authority. Strong negotiating skills are also critical. Written reports at can include research papers, analytical studies, and solution review.
Leadership & Influence
- Must be persuasive and have strong negotiating skills. Guidance and motivation should be provided to junior members.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Technical/Theoretical Knowledge
At this level, the incumbent must be able to:
- Undertake the leadership role in the coordination and integration of multiple SAP projects comprising a large and complex program of business change.
- Drive the design and implementation of new business processes with organizational structure and required SAP configuration.
- Plan a project, allocate and direct staff and other resources to accomplish project tasks, and maintain control over projects.
- Handle the communication of project related objectives, processes, events issues, status and results, and drives business change for responsible project areas.
- Understand the business strategy of SAP functional areas and works with the team to define business requirements.
- Communicate and coordinate with other team leads, business leadership, and Project Manager to ensure appropriate integration of processes and modules across the enterprise.
- Oversee, define and monitor critical path activities and resolves issues or escalates issues to the Project Manager as needed.
- Maintain history reports, identify and address re-occurring problems, and assist in the development and execution of SAP and business process best practices across the organization.
- Provide recommendations for enhancements/changes that may involve custom design, optional and third party products to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of SAP systems. Provide highest degree of technical engineering and support to the SAP team.
- Be responsible for the deliverables cost and schedule, and quality of one or more SAP modules. Responsible for software integration, external interface development and technical documentation.
Organization/Industry Perspective & Knowledge Breadth
- Should understand how NYPA interacts with outside organizations, including other utilities and regulatory agencies, and with its customers. Additionally, must be familiar with NYPA’s budgets, costs, rate structures, and policies.
Project Management
- Will manage projects of all sizes and requires advanced skill sets in order to:
- Execute project initiation through ITAC (Information Technology Advisors Committee) and PRB (Project Review Board) review processes, procurement processes, and vendor selection processes.
- Manage all aspects of project lifecycle. Determine appropriate software systems, development schedules, user training, and systems testing. Determine budgetary requirements for individual projects. Assure overall project quality and ensure timely completion of deliverables; ensure the adherence of projects to budgetary constraints.
- Implement solutions via project management methodology; deploy the solution to operational production environment.
- Direct meetings with potential vendors to produce and feasible solution options and recommendations.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Minimum 8 years quality experience (or a minimum of 12 years of directly related experience for non-degree holders) including at least 6 years in an applications development and support environment. Minimum 5 years of project Management experience within various IT disciplines.
Physical Requirements
Overnight travel to the various NYPA locations within New York State.
