Manager, Mechanical Engineering - Utilities

Summary

The Manager Balance of Plant - Mechanical Engineering provides coordination and engineering technical oversite, direction, and support for the Mechanical Engineering Group for Balance of Plant-related projects.


The Balance of Plant includes all the mechanical systems and equipment at NYPA’s hydro and fossil electric generating stations, transmission assets and facilities, and other NYPA and Canal Corporation non-generating or transmission assets and facilities. The generating stations’ Balance of Plant includes all the mechanical systems and equipment not included within the generator, motor-generator, turbine or pump-turbine.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure high quality engineering solutions which are on schedule, within budget, technically accurate, and in accordance with stakeholder requirements.
  • Direct, lead and support engineers to develop modification packages, perform analysis or provide engineered solutions.
  • Perform engineering services including development of designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various mechanical equipment and systems to resolve problems or improvements to the existing systems or components.
  • Identify, work closely with, and coordinate with other stakeholders to develop solutions and responses to customer needs.
  • Review and approve work produced by other engineers, including the designs and specifications and associated calculations.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other engineering disciplines, site personnel, Project Management, Project Development & Licensing, Emergency Management, Quality Assurance, Code Compliance, Legal, Clean Energy Solutions, SSM, regulatory agencies, external stakeholders, and other business units.
  • Develop NYPA Mechanical Engineering standards and requirements.
  • Work closely with the Director to manage staff including performance reviews, salary administration, succession planning and resource balancing.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for junior engineers and develop staff expertise to ensure succession planning and critical core competencies are maintained within NYPA.
  • Identify and recommend solutions to adapt staff to meet changing NYPA needs and future goals.
  • Promote a culture of safety throughout the entire organization.
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated performance as a leader on multi-discipline team projects.
  • Capable of building teams and fostering teamwork amongst personnel with strong collaborative and negotiation skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of the various hydro and fossil electric generation facilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of the various mechanical systems and equipment supporting transmission assets and facilities.
  • Experience and knowledge of utility, commercial and industrial facilities and the analysis, design and integration of their various mechanical systems and components.
  • Ability to apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices, to solve even the most complex engineering problems, and make technical recommendations on design methods and obstacles on a project as well as programmatic level.
  • Extensive understanding of all the various disciplines/types of drawings required for electric generation facilities.
  • Extensive understanding of the fundamental drawing and specification process.
  • Extensive knowledge of and a working familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Ability to develop complete, accurate and detailed modification packages, specifications, drawings, and other engineered construction documents.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of Configuration Management, and Asset Management.
  • Effective coaching skills for junior engineers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise, complete, and articulate reports.
  • Computer literacy with a basic understanding of Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of electric utility’s policies and procedures, preferred.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, from a recognized college or university.
  • Professional Engineer’s license registered in New York State.
  • Extensive experience with, and development in area(s) of mechanical systems and theory.
  • Minimum of 12 years of related work experience.
  • Experience with electric utility policies and business practices.
  • Experience in leading a team of engineers, specifically in the electric utility industry.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 20% travel primarily within NY State to the operating facilities.
  • Occasional travel (less than 5%) outside of NY State, to other states and internationally for required training or factory inspections.
  • Ability to access all areas of our operating facilities.
