Manager Asset Investments

Summary

Within Utility Operations, the Operations Portfolio Management Group (OPMG) utilizes a gated decision-making framework for all investment in our existing infrastructure and growth or investment opportunities.  This process provides the organization prioritized workflow and an optimized portfolio of work, in addition to a governed progression of any proposal across the lifecycle of the asset.  All components of a project lifecycle including development, planning, implementation, performance and close-out are closely monitored and continued alignment with corporate strategies and financial, schedule and risk targets are maintained.

 

The Manager Asset Investments is responsible for the development, implementation and governance around a process to assess and gain organizational support of major investments for our Generation, Transmission and Headquarters assets.  The manager leads collaborative teams that conduct systematic analyses, primarily financially-driven, to understand the impact of major investments to the organization, company and customer base across the state and ensures that decisions are in alignment with our ISO 55000 certified Asset Management system.  Success in this role is the implementation of a system that consistently drives positive decision-making throughout the business with measured results in alignment with forecasts.

Responsibilities

  • Drive diverse teams of financial/analyst professionals that are responsible for the development of analyses which support individual project and/or entire portfolio investments. 
  • Lead the development and implementation of a system that methodically and consistently evaluates the impact of investments made by the company:
    • Develop models and/or tools necessary to conduct analyses that consider financial (ROI, IRR, NPV, Economic Value Added, Quality Indices, etc.) and non-financial (Strategic Value, Risk, Mission Alignment) aspects of a specific or wide range of investment(s) and clearly interpret outcomes useful for decision-making.
    • Develop detailed models for Infrastructure, Transmission and Generation (both traditional and renewable) investments that consider Capex, Opex and salvage values, various owner configurations (i.e. Power Purchase Agreements), pricing indices, market conditions (i.e. regulation updates, power market shifts, policy impacts), scenario analysis, financial execution requirements, cost of service impacts, etc.
    • Determine and maintain an accepted listing of model assumptions across various financial facets and appropriate to current market conditions. 
    • Establish a timely process that identifies potential Strategic, Value-Driven or major Capex/Opex investments, coordinates with representatives across appropriate business units, ensures necessary analyses are conducted and effectively communicates recommendations to major stakeholder units and executive leadership, ultimately driving decisions beneficial to the company. 
    • Determine an effective means of communicating and tracking investment benefits over time and confirming that projects have been realized. 
  • Lead and/or Support collaborative teams in developing robust investment analyses:
    • Lead the development of investment analyses for major Transmission, Generation or Infrastructure investments throughout the Utility Operations organization that involve representatives from appropriate stakeholder groups.
    • Facilitate communications across and upward throughout the business unit, investment committees and executive leadership to ensure organizational support is gained for any recommendations provided. 
    • Support and/or contribute to analyses conducted outside Utility Operations as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and consider potential impacts of that investment on the business.
    • Act as a sounding board for decisions made throughout the organization on everyday investments in support of ISO 55000 objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems, energy markets, typical utility practices, regulations and external industry forces as well as how utilities conduct capital and maintenance investments and their impact to financial performance. 
  • Financial utility/energy industry experience with exposure to energy markets, various types of power agreements, bond/treasury requirements, accounting practices, long range planning, etc..
  • Experience with the development and utilization of financial models/tools to convey business impacts.
  • Excellent communication and persuasion skills – the ability to proactively engage and talk comfortably with anyone from immediate colleagues to remote working groups, and from recent graduates to upper management. 
  • Demonstrated success within a continuously evolving operating environment and have (1) the willingness to be an idea/thought contributor in this atmosphere and (2) the ability to successfully implement those thoughts. 
  • Ability to successfully develop and lead teams, provide them guidance, support, direction, feedback, etc., and take on independent responsibilities to help meet overall team objectives when necessary. 
  • Results driven – ability to hold team members accountable, by keeping team engaged and on task and working collaboratively.
  • Self-confidence to be assertive when taking a position and constructively resolve differences and build consensus among partners
  • Strong technical writing skills and an eye for effectively communicating information visually.

  • Ability to prioritize and plan work accordingly to deliver results in a timely manner. 
  • Expert knowledge or financial and/or data aggregator systems including ERP platforms, work management software, database structures and reporting solutions. 
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical skills with an ability to evaluate large volumes of data, interpret trends and offer solutions or recommendations for corrective action. 
  • Ability to make clear, concise recommendations and present proposals to all levels of personnel including executive management. 
  • Ability to think big and small – can think strategically from a corporate perspective with the ability to drive into the details when necessary. 

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A./B.S.) in Management, Finance, Engineering or related field.
  • Advanced specialty degree or Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from a school accredited by the ABET.
  • Minimum 9-12 years of work experience in a related field. 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working within a Utility Finance, Asset or Portfolio Management environment.
  • Prior experience providing work direction to a team preferred.
  • Advanced certifications (CPA, CFA, CAIA, etc.) preferred. 

Physical Requirements

  • Travel to Regions 25%
