Manager Corporate Insurance

Summary

The Manager Corporate Insurance is responsible for the development and management of strategic relationships with insurance companies and brokers to ensure that NYPA and Canals insurance programs serve to achieve its strategic policy goals. The incumbent will ensure that resources are available and in place to protect NYPA and Canals active employees and its retirees, and its assets, by managing, planning and coordinating a wide variety of risk management and insurance programs. The Manager Corporate Insurance collaborates with various departments within NYPA and Canals as well as external clients to implement and maintain such programs, to mitigate against accidental losses, and to preserve NYPA and Canals assets and financial strength.

Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to the Director Corporate Insurance with the overall administration of NYPA and Canals risk management and insurance programs and with all aspects of the Risk and Insurance Management department. Manage large complex insurance programs and/or multiple insurance programs involving insurance coverage ranging from $250,000 to $500,000,000 and $5.7 billion in assets.
  • Manage the insurance renewal process including the development of specifications and the evaluation of bid proposals, recommendation and/or selection of insurance brokers and companies, the compilation, preparation and verification of underwriter information, applications, negotiation of terms, conditions, coverages and costs to secure favorable terms for NYPA and Canals.
  • Provide insurance and indemnity consulting and guidance to NYPA and Canals staff with respect to coverages, review insurance, and indemnification/hold harmless clauses. Negotiate and resolve all insurance and indemnity bid exceptions to achieve favorable terms and conditions for NYPA and Canals.
  • Identify and analyze potential risks and exposures, evaluate risk control and financing alternatives, and recommend optimal implementation strategies to minimize loss potential.
  • Liaison between insurance broker, insurance company and, NYPA and Canals staff in the management, negotiation and settlement of multi-million dollar liability and property claims.
  • Manage the relationships with third party service providers including brokers, insurers, and other third-party administrators, as well as with NYPA and Canals management and site personnel, to ensure NYPA, Canals and insurance companies are in agreement and that loss prevention engineering and inspection services are performed (jurisdictional inspections) at the sites in accordance with state and local requirements.
  • Develop and manage a cost effective Risk & Insurance Management budget to assure adequate resources are available to protect NYPA and Canals assets.
  • Manage and ensure timely payment of departmental bills/policy premiums, and audit and maintain records on group insurance premium payments, reserves, retentions and claims incurred in an effort to negotiate and secure favorable terms on renewals.
  • Participate in strategic planning sessions, analyze and measure the effectiveness of all programs and partnerships.
  • Manage and direct NYPA and Canals operational audit of fleet program with insurance carriers to ensure premium accuracy.
  • Direct all activities for property and boiler and machinery inspections at each NYPA site to ensure  compliance with underwriting standards and insurance company issued reports are used as a marketing tool for the property renewal submission.
  • Consistently identify and implement insurance/risk management opportunities within NYPA.
  • Review performance of staff; establish development plans and work performance goals and review individual goals each appraisal period.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong proficiency in analyzing insurance risks appropriately and developing programs, processes and controls for managing the risks and mitigating losses.
  • Strong understanding of the insurance market landscape and the ability to stay current on changes in the insurance and utility industries.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex issues to external and/or internal stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects within varying deadlines..
  • Excellent negotiating skills are required for negotiating contractual issues and for the renewals of the various insurance policies.
  • Ability to provide guidance, ensure quality, and coordinate and manage the work performed by others.
  • Ability to work independently and make critical decisions to advance evaluation efforts.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Possesses strong conflict management skills along with good mentoring skills.
  • Ability to examine the situation from several points of view, form an acceptable solution and plan action to implement the evaluation program.
  • Ability to understand the business implications of decisions and strive to improve organizational performance.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge of legislative/regulatory requirements is required.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • achelor’s degree in Business Management, Insurance/Risk Management, Finance or related discipline is required.
  • MBA, Master’s degree in Management, Finance or related advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of demonstrated experience in managing and directing large insurance programs or risk management programs is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of administering risk management programs is preferred.
  • Strong quantitative skills preferred.
  • Experience with Captive and OCIP preferred.
     
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State.
