Manager Electrical Engineering

Summary

Leads research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA’s energy services.  Designs, constructs, and tests equipment. Ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met throughout all engineering activities. 

Provide technical expertise and direction for all equipment and control systems, related to electrical systems utilized in the generation and transmission of electric power and/or Customer electrical systems (low voltage, high voltage, and fire alarm). Develop design solutions for electrical and control systems in all generating facilities, transmission, substations, and/or Customer sites. Ensures that standards of quality, safety, reliability, adherence to schedule and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.

Responsibilities

  • Review performance of engineers; establish work performance goals and review individual goals each appraisal period.  Recommends staff additions, promotions, salary increases, and develop the schedules.
  • Ensure inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various electrical equipment and systems for proper installation, problem identification and trouble shooting, or improvements are properly conducted.
  • Provide direction to and review the electrical design and drafting personnel in the development of the project drawings 
  • Review and approve work produced by other engineers, including the designs and specifications ensuring complete, accurate and detailed modification packages, specifications, drawings and documentation.
  • Ensure staff produce clear, concise, complete and articulate reports which explain recommendations
  • Oversee prioritization of requests to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Ensure coordination of work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution of the project.
  • Oversee inspections and evaluations on vendor products to ensure engineering requirements and Authority needs are satisfied.
  • Develop and retain subject matter expertise of NYPA’s large power apparatus including generators, transformers and circuit breakers
  • Develop engineering model to support O&M issues at NYPA operating facilities (N/A for CPD Group). 
  • Develop equipment specifications and design packages and provide technical oversight for all substation, transmission and generation systems. (N/A for CPD Group).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of commercial,  industrial and/or utility facilities and their various electrical systems and components.
  • Expert knowledge of and extensive familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated performance as a leader on multi-discipline team projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of NYPAs policies and procedures.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • New York State Professional Engineers license.
  • Minimum 5 years of applicable experience preferred. 
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in NYS.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.
  • Management experience or experience leading a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Ability to access all areas of the plant and conduct physical evaluations of grounds and equipment including ability to work at high elevations.
  • NY State Driver’s license required

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $150,000 - $205,700. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
