Summary

The Manager Real-Time Trading oversees real-time bidding activities of 21 power plants (hydro and fossil assets) which account for approximately 20% of New York State’s energy needs. The manager provides oversight of the Real-Time Energy Trading desk and provides leadership and management review of the trading staff in performing daily functions.

Additionally, the manager coordinates with department peers to implement NYPA’s Vision2030 strategy, which is the organization’s 10-year strategic plan to deliver clear, innovative, and impactful change within the organization and for its customers and NY State. #LI-VB1

Responsibilities

  • Manage, guide and direct the day-to-day Real-Time Trader activities for approximately 6,400 MWs of energy as they respond to changes in market conditions, volatility, and plant availability, to optimize revenue.
  • Analyze the bid impacts made to the market for issues related to reference price levels, bidding changes, and effect that NYPA generators may have on the marketplace, and answer inquiries from the NYISO.
  • Provide recommendations as real market conditions change to revise strategies and ensure constant communication to advise the forward markets and day-ahead strategies are in alignment with the energy markets.
  • Collaborate with the Energy Control Center (ECC) and other teams regarding NYISO requirements, cross functional tasks, policy and procedure development, financial measures, internal audit requirements, compliance obligations, NERC, and operational data.
  • Interact with external organizations on operational and financial management topics that impact NYPA generation assets.
  • Organize and maintain GRM operating procedures, documents, and reports consistent internal controls protocols.
  • Stay current on evolving policies, technical requirements and market regulations and share information with the staff in developments related to the energy marketplace.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Wholesale Electricity Market, ISO tariff and market operation rules and regulations for energy trading, market design, system operations, generating facility operations and risk management principles.
  • Ability to understand different products a Run of the River Hydro, Pump Storage, Combined Cycle, and Combustion Turbine can offer to the NYISO market.
  • Understanding of Installed Capacity Requirements, auction market protocol and the ability to coordinate activities with staff and teams.
  • Knowledge of trading strategies, purchasing, selling and delivery process for the natural gas and oil industry.
  • Strong managerial, communication and interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to work with various functional groups.
  • Advanced analytical and reasoning skills, ability in accumulating and interpreting large amounts of data and information to support and develop business strategies.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of ISO or energy trading experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience required.

Physical Requirements

  • Up to 5% travel within NY state.
