Mechanical Engineering is primarily responsible for the entire fossil fleet and balance of plant of the hydro facilities. This includes high and low energy systems including high pressure steam, pneumatic controls, system lube oils, fire suppression, aero-derivative solutions for power production, liquid and gaseous fuel systems, governor control systems, advance monitoring systems of pressure, temperature, and flow rates, protective coating systems, and crane lifting and hoisting devices.
The successful intern will gain exposure to power generation systems from legacy plants to technological cutting edge processes. They will work closely with all SMEs in the department gaining valuable insight of specialty knowledge areas, expanding their understanding of possible opportunities and career routes.
Day to day, the successful intern will work in supporting crane lifting projects. This will ensure a cross functional development with varied disciplines, including: mechanical, civil, electrical, project management, operations, and cost control. The intern will organize cross functional team meetings to support ongoing work with vendor services. The intern will make site visits and walk down equipment to have hands on understanding of challenges and how to implement solutions that provide customer satisfaction.
In departing, the successful intern will have gained an understanding of NYPAs vision and mission in delivering a cleaner energy future for NYS. The intern will be able to demonstrate coordination between project delivery, engineering, operations, and finance to deliver successful project solutions.
Our paid 10-week Summer Developmental Internship program runs from June 3 - August 8, 2025. As an Intern, you will receive professional development, on-the job experience in the energy industry, exposure to executives, and networking opportunities to help build a solid foundation for your future career.

Responsibilities
- Participate in department-specific projects, analysis, research methods and learn project management skills
- Support team in developing business solutions that contribute to NYPA’s VISION2030 strategic goals
- Research industry trends and emerging technologies to contribute to the continuous improvement of our programs
- Other projects as assigned; will vary based on focus area
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with competing priorities
- Ability to work both independently and collaborate as part of a team
- Provide positive customer service for internal and external stakeholders
Education, Experience and Certifications
Enrollment in an associate’s, undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university is required. Recent graduates are not eligible for our Developmental Internship program.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the internship from June 3 - August 8
