Payroll Analyst

Summary

The Payroll Analyst will help administer the payment and reporting of wages, including taxes and other deductions, maintenance of time & attendance records, and paid time off balances in accordance with organizational policies, collective bargaining agreements and governmental regulations. They will process changes to employee master records in ADP, calculate special payments, reconcile payroll registers, process 3rd party payments, and distribute various reports and checks to both employees and sites.

 

Experience with automated payroll systems is required, ADP experience is preferred. Windows and MS Office capability is required.

Responsibilities

  • Process all entries for multiple payrolls including time entry and master data, deduction changes, direct deposit entries, W4 changes, paid time off balance adjustments, new hires, and additional payments.
  • Monitor the time & attendance system to ensure compliance with NYPA policy by troubleshooting problems encountered with employee entry, Manager’s approvals, and site Finance processing.
  • Reconcile payroll registers against original source data verifying all paychecks are processed accurately.
  • Verify data exported from the payroll system to ensure in-house database reports have captured complete and accurate data.
  • Update in-house databases with information from payroll system; creating basic queries/reports in ADP as needed and updating existing queries.
  • Analyze, reconcile, and remit payments to 3rd party vendors; research and resolve variances between amounts deducted and amount remitted.
  • Calculate and process special checks for retroactive payments, final payments, sick & vacation payouts, taxable relocation, etc.
  • Review entries in payroll system to ensure outcome will have the appropriate taxable implications for the employee.
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong math/accounting aptitude is required.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and basic knowledge of Access is required.
  • Strong knowledge of current payroll compliance procedures and laws necessary.
  • Full knowledge of ADP Vantage is preferred.
  • Full knowledge of SAP is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and a detailed oriented approach are required.
  • Ability to work on projects with little supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written skills required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Keen trouble-shooting and analytical abilities.
  • Understanding of NYPA and Canal policies and Union contracts or ability to develop.
  • Strong knowledge of automated payroll systems.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Associate’s Degree in a business relevant field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Management, or Finance is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of business-related payroll experience.    
     

Physical Requirements

Limited travel (about 10%) required primarily to our generating facilities.
