Power Portfolio Trader I

The Power Portfolio Trader/Manager studies, evaluates, and develops energy trading strategies for each individual NYPA generator for the NYISO Day Ahead Market.  The Power Portfolio Manager assembles and interprets large amounts of data to develop bidding strategy, assess market trends and generate detailed reports.  The Power Portfolio Trader/Manager will coordinate the DAM bidding philosophy with the Real-Time desk so as to maximize the NYPA generator assets, while minimizing risk.

  • Develop bid strategies related to short term energy trading on a daily basis including bidding New York Power Authority’s (NYPA’s) 25 generating units into the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) Day-Ahead Energy and Ancillary Services Markets.
  • Manage over 6000MWs of hydro, pump storage, combine cycle, combustion turbines generation into the NYISO market to recover approximately $1 billion in energy revenues.
  • Manage either NYPA’s Hydro or Fossil Fuel portfolio to optimize revenue and meet established revenue targets.
  • Implement effective strategies for bidding individual NYPA Generating Units into the ISO energy and ancillary service markets and meet daily deadlines. 
  • Analyze, develop, implement and evaluate short term, e.g. weekly, trading strategies for individual NYPA generating units including conducting market energy price surveys and economic analysis for owned and contracted resources.
  • Interface with Operations Superintendents / Operations Managers, Operational Performance, and Financial groups to ensure full asset revenue optimization.
  • Perform economic analysis regarding appropriate timing of planned generating unit outages relative to economic market conditions to minimize foregone revenue impact to NYPA.
  • Analyze and evaluate short-term energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects including energy price, transmission, counterparty, and contractual terms are favorable to and consistent with NYPA guidelines for risk management.
  • Communicate and present revenue impacts to Resident Managers and assist with providing data to justify plant equipment upgrades to maximize plant value.
  • Assist Plant Personnel in analyzing outage durations and impacts of plant de-rates / forced outages to the Plant’s value in the Installed Capacity market.
  • Review all revisions made to the bidding strategies in response to emergency or unforeseen operating circumstances in coordination with the Hourly Trading Function, ECC/Generating Project personnel and other functions, e.g., Fuels Group, as required.
  • Interface with Energy Control Center (ECC) and individual generating project staff relative to individual generating unit performance to jointly determine the amount of energy that is needed/ available before engaging the market.
  • Manage NYPA trading tools as appropriate to reduce NYPA exposure to market volatility when NYPA generating units are unable to perform at full output.

  • Working knowledge of other Regional Transmission Organizations is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills required.
  • Strong computer skills required.
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects with minimum supervision.
  • Skilled at adapting and responding to changes in the market and to plant conditions.
  • Ability to review bidding systems and offer suggestions to vendors to improve bidding tools to adapt to market changes.
  • Ability to represent the Generation Resource group to other internal NYPA depts. as well as outside organizations such as other utilities, regulatory agencies, regional transmission operators and customers.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present through presentations to project sites.
  • Knowledgeable of NYPA’s GRM Operating Procedures.
  • Ability to maintain knowledgeable and stay current with ISO procedures, as they pertain to the bidding of generation into the ISO Energy and Ancillary Services Markets.
  • Basic knowledge of the natural gas and Oil industry; specifically the purchasing, selling and delivery.
  • Basic understanding of the NYISO Installed Capacity Auction Market Policies and Procedures.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Business, Administration or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of ISO experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of managing NYPA’s generation into the NYISO required or external energy trading experience into the ISO required (1yr).
