Program Manager - Sustainability (ESG/Reporting)

Summary

The Sustainability team serves as a strategic sustainability advisor to business units and departments across the organization, providing guidance and analytical support in defining goals, targets, and metrics, identifying strategies, developing programs, and measuring and reporting progress. Responsibilities of team members vary depending on their specific area of focus.

 

The Program Manager’s primary area of responsibility is reporting. The Program Manager will oversee implementation and maintenance of ESG software and management of ESG data, and co-lead preparation of reports, including NYPA’s annual integrated report. The integrated report will align with leading ESG frameworks and standards, including SASB, TCFD and GRI. The Program Manager will collaborate with departments across the organization in the development of report content, and will work closely with Internal Business Controls, Internal Audit, and Law to ensure the report can be third-party assured.

 

The Program Manager should have advanced knowledge of ESG strategy and performance management. The Program Manager should be well-organized, exhibit a keen attention to detail, and display a strong interest in identifying ways to optimize data gathering and reporting processes.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily management through the life cycle of the program.
  • Support stakeholders in planning and development of projects and programs. Define the program controls, processes, procedures, reporting, etc. to manage the program.
  • Monitor progress and manage risks to ensure that the milestones are being met across the various projects and programs.
  • Manage the program budget and identify internal and external funding sources,
  • Coordinate the projects and the interdependencies between various projects and programs.
  • Manage projects across business units and departments: define project scope, develop detailed work plans, and lead project teams involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Perform special/advanced analyses as directed by the Director of Sustainability.  Research and analyze industry data to support the development of strategies, policies, and programs.
  • Participate in internal and external working groups and committees and represent the Sustainability group on working groups and committees as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong experience as project manager of large and complex projects.  Knowledge of formal project management practices, such as Project Management Institute (PMI) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of energy, climate, and sustainability (environmental, social, governance and economic) issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of corporate sustainability and sustainable operations.
  • Able to work with all levels of management internal and external.
  • Strong leaderships and managerial skills.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and resources allocations
  • Exceptional analytical and quantitative skills, including proficiency in statistical and cost/benefit analysis.
  • Ability to establish strategic benchmarks, develop past and future performance trends, and make recommendations regarding targets and KPIs.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills; ability to handle significant workload with multiple projects, timelines, and due dates.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize among competing needs and proactively address issues.
  • Resourceful with demonstrated ability to manage complex problems and recommend solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams, delegate tasks and provide guidance and feedback to others.  Ability to work cross-functionally with all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills; ability to summarize complicated matters for a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of NYPA’s business model and operations preferred.
     

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in sustainability, engineering, environmental science, economics, or related field
  • Graduate degree in sustainability or related field preferred
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in analytics or project management
  • Minimum 4 years of direct experience in corporate sustainability and sustainable operations.
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Energy/utility industry experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Excel

Physical Requirements

 

  • Approximately 25% travel primarily within New York State.
