SVP, NYPA Development

Summary

The SVP, NYPA Development provides the leadership, management, and vision necessary to ensure that NYPA meets its VISION2030 Goals including but not limited to its long-term business strategy; managing project and corporate development; evaluating new business opportunities, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures as required to meet NYPA’s objectives. This position reports directly to the President & CEO and collaborates closely with the organization’s executive management team to establish the vision and strategic direction for Development. The SVP, NYPA Development is responsible for leading their management team through the creation of specific strategic and operating plans, goals, objectives, and priorities to achieve VISION2030. The SVP, NYPA Development advises the CEO, the Board of Trustees, and the other Executive Management Committee members on matters about Business Development activities and ensures all functions under their direction are operating together seamlessly to achieve the strategy. 

Responsibilities

  • As a member of the executive team, work closely with the President & CEO and Executive Management Committee to develop and accomplish goals and strategic plans established by board members and executives of the Company. 
  • Provide entrepreneurial sensibilities with an ability to create and drive forward innovative, new program ventures in consultation with subject-matter experts in relevant strategic areas.
  • Serve as the strategic “thought leader” to position the Authority to sustain and improve its competitive position.
  • Develop specific strategic and operating plans, goals, objectives, priorities and procedures to achieve those areas of VISION2030. Ensure all functions within area of responsibility operate together effectively to achieve such strategy.
  • Monitor industry trends and best practices in energy service delivery in areas of responsibility, including advances in technology. Implement best practices as appropriate.
  • Create, communicate, and implement the organization’s vision, mission, and overall direction with clarity, building energy and consensus around the organization's direction and strategies. 
  • Drive a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.
  • Develop and deliver programs ensuring the organization is at the forefront of evolving New York State needs and interests.
  • Review monthly financial reports and projections to ensure adherence; review and approve the yearly budget submittal. 
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the President or the CEO.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with developers and regulatory agencies to identify project opportunities and to facilitate their successful development.
  • Requires ability to negotiate, communicate and influence senior executive leadership within NYPA.
  • In-depth business knowledge and leadership capability in the Energy Industry. 
  • Knowledge of the NYISO market (preferred) and the ability to conceptually assess projects’ performance in the markets.
  • Provides thought leadership on complex business challenges within NYPA. Exceptional leadership skills as proven through career advancement.
  • Ability to manage multi-disciplinary aspects of project development and licensing.
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills to align internal functions, communication and concurrence during project development, licensing, compliance and implementation.
  • Demonstrated financial skills to assess projects’ financial performance and to identify and understand a path to cost recovery.
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve policy issues, in concert with executive management regarding project development and licensing.
  • Strong negotiating skills with the ability to negotiate NDAs, MOUs, PPAs and definitive agreements necessary to successfully develop projects.
  • Excellent coaching skills are required to support staff development and succession planning goals.
  • Exceptional communication skills including strong business writing and oral presentation abilities are required.
  • Ability to support strategic change to meet organizational goals, establish an organizational vision and to implement it in a continuously changing environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with the proven ability to lead and execute business initiatives and provide tactical planning.
  • Ability to maintain a trusted and collaborative relationship with senior executives across all business units.
  • Ability to assimilate information, evaluate facts, determine alternative solutions to problems, and to reach and communicate sound management and business decisions.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, economics, environmental science, finance, or related discipline.
  • Advanced degree preferred. 
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in managing energy infrastructure projects.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience developing electric transmission, renewable, or energy storage projects is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience managing staff.
  • Experience interfacing with regional transmission organizations, i.e. New York ISO, and familiarity with energy markets is preferred.
  • Regulatory experience with agencies such as FERC, U.S. Corps of Engineers, and Public Service /Utility Commissions, is required.
  • Industry certifications such as Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional, etc. are preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 10-20% travel primarily in New York State
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
