Summary

The Senior Vice President (SVP), Nuclear Development will be a pivotal leader responsible for spearheading and executing the company's strategy for growth in the nuclear energy sector. This includes identifying, evaluating, and developing new nuclear power generation projects, with a strong focus on advanced nuclear technologies. The SVP will drive all phases of project development, from concept to financial close and early-stage construction, fostering key partnerships, securing necessary regulatory approvals, and ensuring projects align with the company's strategic objectives, financial targets, and sustainability goals. This role requires exceptional leadership, deep industry knowledge, a strong commercial orientation, and the ability to navigate complex technical, regulatory, and financial landscapes. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine the nuclear power development strategy, identifying market opportunities, emerging technologies, and competitive advantages. 
  • Translate strategic objectives into actionable development plans and targets for new nuclear projects. 
  • Stay abreast of global nuclear energy policy, regulatory changes, technological advancements, and market trends. 
  • Drive innovation and research initiatives to advance nuclear technology and improve operational efficiency. 
  • Develop and implement the strategic vision and direction for the nuclear energy function. 
  • Lead the identification, evaluation, and screening of potential nuclear power development opportunities. 
  • Conduct or oversee feasibility studies, site assessments, and techno-economic analyses for prospective projects. 
  • Evaluate various nuclear technologies (SMRs, Generation IV reactors, fusion, etc.) for suitability and commercial viability. 
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with key stakeholders, including technology vendors, utilities, industrial off-takers, government agencies, investors, and community leaders. 
  • Negotiate and structure commercial agreements, joint ventures, partnerships, and off-take agreements. 
  • Represent the company at industry conferences, forums, and governmental engagements. 
  • Oversee the entire project development lifecycle, including conceptual design, pre-FEED studies, permitting, licensing, land acquisition, and environmental impact assessments. 
  • Develop detailed project execution plans, timelines, budgets, and resource requirements. 
  • Manage project risks, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards. 
  • Transition projects from development to execution/construction phases in coordination with relevant teams. 
  • Direct the strategy for navigating complex national nuclear regulatory frameworks. 
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of license applications, environmental permits, and other regulatory documentation. 
  • Maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies and proactively address compliance requirements. 
  • Lead the financial structuring of nuclear projects, including securing project financing, equity partnerships, and government incentives. 
  • Develop business cases, financial models, and investment proposals for stakeholders. 
  • Manage due diligence processes with potential investors and lenders. 
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of nuclear development professionals. 
  • Foster a culture of safety, reliability, innovation, accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement within the team and across the organization. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong executive presence and ability to build rapport with C-suite executives, government officials, and external partners. 
  • Extensive knowledge of nuclear technology, reactor operations, and regulatory requirements. 
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale nuclear projects and operations. 
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and environmental stewardship. 
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute long-term plans. 
  • Experience in driving innovation and research in the nuclear energy sector. 
  • Familiarity with financial management and budgeting processes. 

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical), Business, Finance, or a related technical field. Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related field preferred.  
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the nuclear energy industry, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. 

Physical Requirements

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $258,000 - $300,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
