Senior Director Electrical & Controls

Summary

Senior Director Electrical Engineering and Controls will provide engineering leadership and direction in support of NYPA transmission projects in support of VISION2030 including Power System Equipment, Protection & Control, Metering, Operation Control System, and Test & Integration. Develop coordinated approach to engineering designs solutions, drives design standards amongst electrical engineering disciplines. #LI-AV1

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct oversight and direction of NYPA NERC and NPCC compliance program within Engineering. Accountable for execution of engineering projects, analysis and documentation under NYPA’s compliance responsibility program, contributing the reliability of the Bulk Electric System.  
  • Drive the development of electrical standards and designs for power system equipment, metering, relay protection, control systems and station architecture. Work with internal groups to develop and maintain technical standards that support Asset Management strategy.
  • Lead technical planning and evaluation for the asset management lifecycle of electrical assets, relay, meter and control systems.
  • Ensure multidiscipline approach to design standards address asset life cycle Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety (RAMS) methodologies and cost targets.  
  • Facilitate and drive collaboration between the Electrical & Controls Engineering disciplines, and other project stakeholders/customers in fostering a project team environment.
  • Enhance compliance program and adhere strictly to existing procedures to further Reliability Standards program. Ensure processes and prioritization for NYPA’s compliance program within Engineering.
  • Manage employees including performance management, salary administration, succession planning and workload balancing. Identify and recommend solutions to modify staff to meet goals.
  • Develop staff expertise in electrical engineering areas, create development opportunities within and/or between disciplines and maintain depth at critical core competencies within engineering.
  • Potential to have a direct role in emergency preparedness, incident management or response and as such will require training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Subject matter knowledge in a combination of: power system operations, power equipment, relay protection, metering, SCADA control systems, electrical codes, short circuit, load flow, and transient analysis.
  • Understanding of engineering project management and construction within the utility industry.
  • Ability to develop and train the engineering and technical teams and fostering a collaborative environment with management and bargaining unit personnel
  • Strong working knowledge of NERC CIP and O&P Standards and the NPCC Directories.  
  • Ability to produce clear and concise written documents and oral presentations
  • Capable of responding to dynamic and rapidly changing projects including NYPA, developer, NYISO and Customer side projects.
     

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
  • New York Professional Engineer license required
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in an electric utility environment
  • Minimum 5 years managing people
     

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to conduct field inspection and reviews as necessary is required.
  • A willingness to travel as much as 25% is required.
